The guys that really kill me are the ones who use their kid to snag a good players graph. They usually carry their 1 year old kid to a group when a good player, like Chipper Jones, Albert Pujols, etc., are signing and ask the player to sign for the kid. The kid doesn't know the player much less what a baseball is used for. And yes, Dad goes away with a smile knowing he "punked" everyone waiting for a graph. The wife/mother is usually close by holding a bag with a half dozen balls as they hand the signed ball over to her and they grab another one - I see it all the time...

I've seen this once with Twins legend Tony Oliva at the Minnesota State Fair- a man with a daughter runs up begging to get Oliva's autograph because his daughter is, "the biggest fan of Oliva, more than Mauer" ( yeah right ). Reluctantly Oliva said ok because the man is so nice to kids, usually doesn't sign unless at a booth.

The guy sets down his kid and says, "OK GREAT!" and whips out a duffel bag with a ton of stuff to get signed; balls, bats, hats, cards, and I'm sitting there in disbelief with my simple 8x10. I definitely wanted to say something to the guy but let it slide.

Yeah, inside the Wells Fargo center I often graph with a guy who always asks the sixers players for their sneakers, kinda lame- same thing you are describing.

Also, while graphing at the Washington Wizards hotel, I got physically assaulted. A guy thought that I stole his spot in line (I didn't) and I told him I didn't. He grabbed me and literally tried to pull me behind him. I ultimately decided not to make a huge deal of it and moved behind him. Still, it was kind of weird being physically assaulted over a John Wall auto (at least I still got the auto).

Philly hotels are full of dealers of the worst kind- people that will misinform you to throw you off the scent, people who won't respond to you when you speak to them (like totally ignore you). My friend who graphs hotels a lot in Philly said that they are intensely aggressive to "new guys." They want to keep the hotel racket for only the dealers so they make their money. He said that one group of dealers in particular are very rough- he said that sometimes they will take their sharpies and draw all over the clothes and the items that new guys bring to get signed to deter them from coming back.

Bottom line is: I am a new guy, so I will watch my back, and I am just getting my graphs and getting the fudge out of there.

That's beyond messed up. Wonder how they'll feel when someone responds with a cup full of bleach on their items.

    I totally would. No hesitation.

Philly hotels are definetely not the freindliest place to try and graph. I saw a guy get headbutted in the face and suffer a broken nose a few years back while waiting to get Sidney Crosby. The cops and ambulance all wound up coming and when Crosby came out he would only sign for the guy who just had his nose busted. It may be just 1 or 2 that are the agressive ones there but they are all together and part of the group of about 12-15 guys that are there most of the time.

They'd probably like it by beating your face in or stabbing you.

I graphed a Philly hotel once, and received false information (I missed McCutchen!) about what players had come out already. Luckily, I got my revenge when security kicked everyone who wasn't a hotel guest out of the place, but I got to stay and had the whole place to myself.

In Boston, its kinda the same way. I do all my graphing in person. I've been doing it for years casually, but for the last 2 years I've been doing it more frequently. I've met some really cool down to earth graphers. And I've met some of the biggest @ssholes possible. When I started doing it more, I would try to spark up a convo with these guys, and lots of them would just ignore me. Theres a ring of about 15 hardcore Boston autographers, and they would slit your wrist for an auto. The biggest thing about in person autos is to not get discouraged. I used to get bad info and all that, but if someone tells you the team is at said hotel, but that same person is at a different hotel, what hotel are you gonna stand at? I'll stand all day with that person making it awkward. I love it. I could care less about pissing off dealers. I'm there as a fan, not to sell the auto. It used to be awkwardly fun in the begining.

Seeing as Boston has become a hot spot for movies recently, I'm very good at getting movie infomation, and I know alot of movie crews. Lots of those guys are now trying to be friends with me for the movie set info and hotel info. I just continue to tell them that whoever they are looking for is at the Ramada, cause no one stays there lol. But in all honesty, you do have to make friends with some of the dealers, because they will toss you info that you wouldn't otherwise have. Plus, dealers know flight info and know every hotel of every sports team. Boston is fun, but its not fun unless you're in the know.

I was at a Minor League baseball game and there was only 93 people in attendance so i figured i could easily get a bat, i went to the opposing dugout to try to get one and there was only 1 person (30 year old man) trying to get a bat, He asks for one and gets one(in my head im thinking great i can get one easily) the guy then takes the bat he got and lays it on the ground (i had no idea why) he then asks for another bat...and gets one, he then puts THAT one on the ground and asks for another...you guessed it he got a THIRD bat. and i didnt get any. I later figured out that he laid the bats on the ground so the players wouldnt see that he already got one and they would give him one because he didnt get one. I was mad to say the least

I went to a Kelloggs dinner with Mariano Rivera once that my mom's work held. They gave out free Mariano Rivera autographed Kelloggs baseballs. Sure, its not a ROMLB, but its a baseball with Mariano's autograph on it, so it's good enough for me. A few people tried to get him to sign more and the coordinators tried to stop them. It put Mariano in a really awkward spot, but he signed everything people gave him. The coordinator kept saying don't do it but he sort of said back to her like, "what would you like me to do? I can't say no." It was really cool that he signed extras, but I felt bad that he was put into such a position. Some guy got him to sign the back of his jersey, his fitted hat, a baseball he had in his pocket, and an 8x10 picture!

Also, at a Knick game this year, some guy kept bumping to get to the front of the line trying to get his Melo jersey signed. However, only Amare was signing. He bumped me and few people out of the way, and told Amare to go give the jersey to Carmelo and bring it back. Amare sort of laughed and walked away, leaving me and the other 5 people there without autographs.
