    Next Roy?

What a joke, 16th in shutouts. Bad save percentage.

Broduer (and many other goalies) would have never been in the NHL if it wasnt for Roy. He invented the style 99% of goalies use today.

What Roy did for goaltending will never be done again.

Stats wise he will be passed by many to come. But what he came in and did was what made him so remarkable.

Roy didn't actually invent the butterfly style (assuming that's what you're referring to). It was around long before, most credit Glenn Hall with the "invention". Roy simply changed the way it was used. It went from being one save selection to what many consider to be a goaltending style. I would credit Roy with inventing the "blocking butterfly" style. Best example of a current goalie that would fit this style would be Giguere.

Yes, invented was the wrong word, but he did prefect it and make it the style most goalies use today

I'd say in today's game the butterfly is more of a save selection than a "style". Look at Brodeur and Thomas, their goaltending is extremely different than Roy's or any other blocking butterfly goalie.

I know they arent in the top 20 (probably), but, you gotta admit Ryan Miller (who is on the sabres :) ) and Marc-Andre Fleury have some talent also.

And we cant forget Mr. Billy Smith!!!!!!

Wow, how did we get from Gretzky to goalies? lol :)

Doesnt matter, i like where this is going! :D

yea they are very talented. and i have no idea how people question roy he has the most playoff wins by a mile and most playoff SOS

and 3 conn smythes as a GOALIE.

AS A GOALIE. it is way harder for a goalie to win the award, especially more then once. i mean the 3 conn smythes as a goalie is more impressive then jordan winning 6 finals mvps.

And no one mentions the greatest of all time....Bobby Orr. If you didn't see him in his prime, you missed true greatness. No nickname for him, they haven't invented the word yet! The only player that could truely control a game night in night out. He redefined how a defencemen plays. Take a looks at his stats. Unbelieveable.

The best focus I've ever seen. Look at the picture of him scoring the Stanely Cup winning goal against St. Louis. You and I would be cringing waiting to fall on the ice, this man has stick up in the air !!

Before anyone speaks of being a great player in the NHL, they have to have their name multiple times on the holy grail

Arguments please....Thanks for reading, James (416beatles)

Satan81 LOL..no can't blame you for that. You should check the internet and watch some of his end to end rushes. I'm sure some are on there. They will blow you away!!

there was a game in the playoffs at the old Boston Gardens against the leafs and Pat Quinn caught Orr with his head down. Quinn took a penalty and was in the box but they had to take hime out or the Boston fans would have killed him...anyone remember?? That should be on the internet somewhere.

P.S. - I'm a leaf fan and hate Boston BUT appreciate true greatness!

    Regards, James (416beatles)

    Different Era, Different Game

The problem here is that you are comparing different times and Gretzky is unlike any other great. Even Jordan has people with more points (wilt chamberlain) or closer points than Gretz.

Wayne Gretzky had 894 goals: 1963 assists :(2,957) total points in his career
Mark Messier the second highest points producer ever had 694 goals: 1193 assists: (1,887) total points
Do the math, 2957-1887 = 1070 more points from the best to the second best. Glenn anderson had 1099 pts and bobby hull had 1170 pts in there entire career's and they are "great" players. Gretzky has basically an entire "great" player career difference in points from the next guy running..

It is unfair to compare ovechkin to gretzky because times have changed. The game is more strict, and there are huge differences. Goalie pads for instance are way larger now days, meaning they block a lot more goals. Defense and goalies are trained a lot better now too, becuase there are state of the art facilities and tchnology to maximies performance. Also the style of play has changed as there is an unwritten rule of max goals per game..ie when is the last time you saw a team score 10 goals in a game?? 1985 oilers vs chicago was 12-9. Certainly teams that are beating a team 7-1 or 6-0 by the thrid can put the puck in 3 more times, but they dont out of respect and fear of future retaliation. During gretzky's era teams didnt slow down, if they had a 3-4 goal lead they kept pushing till they dessimated there opponents. Thats why there was epic fighting...
Also, gretzky had super line mates as Prior to the resolution of the 2004–05 lockout, (the year ovechkin came in) the NHL was the only major North American professional sports league that had no luxury tax, revenue sharing, salary cap, or salary floor, Meaning you could put (ovechkin, crosby, backstrom, malkin toews, sedins all on one team if you wanted to make a power house..now days that is impossible. It will be unlikely that anyteam wins back to back cups or triples ever again like the oilers, kings rangers....

Just remember Ovechkin did score more goals in his rookie year than Gretzky, and out of all the 1000's of drafts picks every year, ovie is already #263 in points of all time and it has only been 1/3 of his career. Gretzky cant be touched period, but Ovechkin is a once in 20 years kind of talent. If his knee/leg heals, he might comeback to end up scoring more goals in time than gretzky, but total points and championships would be virtually impossible now days. IMO put greatzky in nowadays, he might be comparable to Ovechkin, but not much better if better at all..
