Over Paying For PC Cards
Alright, I'm in a little bit of a dilemma and I thought I'd get some opinions. It also makes for a good discussion. Is it really worth way overpaying for PC cards? There is one Malhotra GU on ebay for $10 that I don't see very often. However I'm likely to see it again, and the card isn't even #'d. Plus it's Manny Malhotra, I don't like to undermine my own pc player but non-GU of players like Gaborik don't sell for $10. So my question is: Is it really worth overpaying for a cheaper PC card just to acquire it now instead of later? What are your thoughts? experiences?
Thanks,
Alexander

I got sniped and lost
I won that item and now got it in my pc for 7.00
So, I'd wait

For me, part of the fun of collecting is waiting to get a great deal - I picked up a Tavares YG on ebay for around $27 before xmas after losing out on tons of auctions because I dont overpay.

I'll go with "it depends".
To keep the costs of collecting down, I tend to wait on the easier cards.... until I get what I think will be a "normal" price for them...... by "normal" I mean what the card will sell for, 3 months after the release, if an eBay seller listed it at 99 cents, and let the auction run for 1 week.
When older, or very hard to find stuff shows up - it's a little different.
Yes, I set a 'max' price I'm willing to pay..... but I know the market for Ranford pretty well, and my Max is usually enough to get the card. If it's not? I wait for the next copy.
For the case of this Maholtra card, there's a couple of things I wonder about. If you think you're likely to see it again.... and for a significantly smaller cost..... then I would suggest holding out until you get that better price.
Having said that.... if its a card that's 5+ years old, not all that rare - but also doesn't show up for sale too often (how long since you saw another one on eBay?) it could be a while before you see another one. If you're kicking yourself for not buying it in a year from now, $10 may not seem like such a big deal.

If it was my PC guy, I'd go all over it. I don't mind paying substantially over book value just to get something into my collection.
If something books at $20, I don't mind paying $50-$100 if it is something that just does not pop-up. Depends on who you ask though. I do whatever it takes to make my Irbe collection better and better.

I have the same philosophy when it comes to my PC players. On cards that are tough to find, book value really means very little to me and I'm usually willing to essentially meet any price the seller asks unless it is outlandish.
For example, I am trying to land a Toews Draft Board that books at $250, and I fully expect to pay way more. I don't mind waiting on cards that are numbered higher, but for the rare stuff I will overpay in a heartbeat to improve my collection.

Depends on the player and the card. If it's a low-numbered auto yeah I'll play the bidding war game if needs be. But when it comes to something like a base parallel or a common insert, my interest level in buying at all fades pretty quickly. A case hit insert I may pay for if it's a nice card (i.e. the BTP Inspired Masks) but for the most part I can relegate those for trades while focusing the $$$ transactions on harder-to-find items.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

If the card isn't that rare then it's probably best to wait, but it if is, then I usually don't even look at the BV these days. I used to care a lot about the BV, but not so much now.

I go by the possibility of whether I will see the card again or how many people would be after the same card.
I, for sure, won't let any true 1/1s slip by me if it pops up cause the majority of the time, it won't come available again.
It really depends on how much you value your player.

i usually wait if its a common card, cause it'll show up later for less (if the card ur speaking of is new). if it's rare and i want it badly enough, i'll make sure i get it even if it costs a little more than i wanted to pay
