jersey card ranttttttttt
I haven't spent serious money on boxes in a loooong time, for a couple of reasons. One, my luck is AWFUL (Aaron Asham anyone??). Second, I don't build sets anymore. And third, why would I chase a jersey card from a box when I can pick up 4 jerseys and an insert from some more-than-decent players for a whopping $16.66 from the weekend card show???

Malkin, arguably the best player in the NHL, marked Prime (I still don't know what that means!!!).......$3.33
Lemieux shiny OPC retro insert /100..........$3.33
Flamers triple jersey for a deluded friend of mine, I could either buy him a Grande Mocha or this for $3.33
Marty Brodeur, the winningest goalie of all time, from a $399 retail box, numbered to 99...........$3.33
annnnnd Brett Hull, who gets no love, but whatever. Numbered to 99........$3.33
So my point, and I do have one, is how much longer can any of this last until we've eaten all of our own and it's All. Completely. Worthless.

You got some great deals on those - not every seller is looking to blow their stuff out (I can only assume this one was) but it's nice when you can pick up some groovy cards for cheap.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Yeah, but it didn't. It didn't sell for $5 either. It did sell for $3.33 and only because I needed a 15th card for my $50 lot. And that's my point. This guy wasn't trying to blow his stuff out, he had business cards and I'm assuming a brick-and-mortar operation on Vancouver Island. He had $20, $10, $5 and $2 boxes in front of the GOOD good stuff and after 3.5 hours, nothing was moving, so he marked 'em all down.
What I'm asking is have we reached the tipping point when it comes to jersey cards?? Other than super-collectors, how many Malkins or Brodeurs or Crosbys does anyone NEED???
They just keep churning them out tho........................

By tipping point do you mean that only exceptional jersery cards are worth anything? If that's the case, then yes. We hit it a long time ago - and it will (likely) only get worse.
What do you think the manufacturers should do? Stop making jersey cards??? Limiting them to only certain products?? Becuase what would happen then - the products without (by and large) wouldn't leave the shelf. Nobody would by them, if there were no 'hits'.

I can't help but feel so connected to this thread. I have also voiced this same concern in many posts. I also do not see the point in breaking into any boxes if the "hits" are only worth a couple dollars..........after others give lowball offers

if we as consumers could get together and boycot specific products(those that are notorious for this kind of return on a large investment) then maybe the manufactuers would take notice.

Jersey cards?
Have you noticed how cheap some patches are starting to go? The market was full 2+ years ago.
It used to be muti-color jerseys only. Now it's no jersey, multi-colour patches only. Same thing with autos, no one wants a sticker anymore.
Frankly I think it's ultimately a good thing for the hobby, if not the individual collector. Once the market is flooded beyond reasonability, people will finally get back to collecting cards instead of worrying whether this patch is from a game-worn or photoshoot jersey.
I cannot WAIT for people to start collecting cards again, no one seems to anymore.

I've got more than a few patches of my own, when I hit them I said "woah, how awesome! I can make a few bucks back on this one." Only to find out that the market just doesn't care anymore. If you can't find a someone looking for your patch for their PC, then it had better be an elite player or there's just no interest.
