Has Contenders matched SP Authentic?

Which has the better rookies of the season? Better product? Holds more value?

SPA rookie autos are a staple set of the hobby.

Contenders or any other mid end product will never match up to one of the most popular rookie sets of the season.

It's as simple as the fact that SPA has over a decade following in this hobby, and Contenders is on its second year.

After 5 years this might be a good question to revisit though.

I'll be in the minority when it comes to this, but yes Contenders has evened it up. Based on the last two years, the designs for rookie autos are simply outstanding by Contenders. I really like the looks of both years, but this year's especially. Also, I think that the rookie patch autos are better in Contenders. The silver ink on black is amazing. Upper Deck FWA are nice but not as nice as Contenders.

As far as overall products, until SPA is live, Contenders wins. It was out a month to 2 months before SPA, and is a stunning product. I wish they would've kept a couple more limited subsets in it like against the glass, but it is a very awesome product none-the-less with a ton of awesome hits. SPA has a lot to live up to, especially with the release date push backs. It better live up to it's hype, because Contenders set a very high bar.


SPA will have resale because of all the Panini haters though. If this was Upper Deck's FWA subset, no one would complain. They'd give UD a pat on the back, and the sale value would go up, especially with the /800 as opposed to out of /999. Think about it. You have 199 less cards per player, which is less odds, which should mean more resale. Although boxes are cheaper, it's still harder to pull an RNH auto out of contenders as opposed to SPA.

Yes FWA have been a staple set, but CCA should too, especially with the patches. People need to forget about the brand making it, and focus on the design.

It looks nice Ill admit, but I think the sharpie/marker they used it a tad too fat which ruins it for me.


Back on topic. For now Contenders is not up to neck and neck with SPA. Maybe in a few years but for now its still SPA.

SPA still has the foothold on this one. Contenders looked real good this year but itll take time to catch up to something that has been around for a while.

I love SPA but Contenders is actually "better" on all fronts in this one. rc auto's /800, auto patches of rc's, and stars/legends + the black rc's for the un-auto'ed rc set. It's a lot to live up to for SPA but they do have a strong hold in the hobby for some unknown reason.
