I'm not following your stance of things posted on the internet is not "real world". If anything people are more real when they can hide behind the screen and not have to face any sort of consequences of their words when face to face. I know there are a lot of trolls out there, but to say that the internet is not real world is a bit short sighted. As far as random words, I don't think most of the posters in the P&R site here are just posting random words that aren't based off of their actual real world thoughts and opinions. I know mine are. I get the idea of not being offended by comments that of strangers, but for people who get blasted over and over on twitter or a blog or a youtube video, it's got to weigh on them. As for here, yes, most of us have not met in person, but when you chat with people for months or years, even in this message board, you do develop somewhat of a relationship even though it's not on the same level as a close friend. You still get an idea of how the person is, even if it is just online. I believe that most people I speak to one this board is being completely true to who they are in "real life".

When it comes to online, I guess my biggest point of confusion is this very site. How is it that we just can't handle a negative word meaning "illegitimate child" since it gets misused too much, but the word that probably gets misused more and worse we can totally handle.
I would seriously like a mod or somebody to explain the difference between "™™™™™™™" and "retard".

one is a curse word and one is not. Like many words it is the context that counts, such as Many Christians believe a sinner will burn in Hell, but you cannot tell someone to go there, such as wickabee you are dumb go to (you get the idea)
when the word retard is used in a negative way, in this forum, it will be dealt with.

That is subjective at best. Both are legitimate words with legitimate meanings that ONLY through context have been morphed into something sinister. There is NO difference between these words. Saying what you said is flat out ignorant. Think about it, why is the B word a "curse" word when it began life as a legitimate descriptive?
Because people morphed the meaning.
Now we have the word retard, which began as a benign descriptive that has, through society, been morphed into something sinister.
It took the exact same path as the B word, it has the same negative-type connotations as the B word, it is used negatively constantly like the B word...
But they're totally different? Please. You gotta do better than that.
And I can say "You're a retard!" but I can't say "[ancestor X] was the ™™™™™™™ child of etc etc"
You see?
Twice now I've complained about use of the word and twice now nothing has happened.
Jay, I like you, but that post 100% garbage. All you're telling me here is you value illegitimate children higher than the mentally ill. That doesn't sound like you, so I'm going to give you a chance to do better.
The two words are exactly the same, yet get treated differently and the mentally ill are on the short end of the sensitivity stick. I guess it doesn't matter, we're just a bunch of stupid retards anyway.

It makes me wonder. If I go on the football sight and make a reference to HOFer "Richard" Nightrain Lane and refer to him by the first name that he went under and someone gets offended that I used that word would I be wrong for it?

I don't know about this site (though it probably applies, I'm about to find out) but on many others you can't even say "cockpit" when talking about an airplane.
Logic and thought seems to fly out the window when deciding what is a "curse" word and what isn't.

wickabee, calling my statement ignorant is also offensive, but I know what you are trying to say so I personally take no offense to it.
If you want SCF to change the rules to fit your needs that will not happen, we both know you will always find fault with something. The website was designed to stop known and accepted curse words, many words can be used in a context to make them offensive, that is why there are mods.
to say nothing has been done is a statement from someone who does not seen what happens behind the scenes, and yes something has been done, it is not in SCF policy to inform you what has or has not been done.
I try to run things around here with a rubberhand rather than a steel fist, but that rubber hand will come back to slap those(and it does sting) that break rules. The only people who have the privilege to know this our the staff and those getting a pm from me about it, it is not up for share or debate.
