Why are 2014-15 Spx Boxes Over $100
Just a quick question on this. I believe the best jersey auto is johnny hockey at about 40-50. How can box prices still be $100. The odds are you will pull a $5 jersey auto and some non numbered jersey cards. There really is about 20-35 dollars value in a box. Is this a case of UD not marking it down to distributors or are people really paying this much for them.....

SPx has always been a $100+ box product, especially within the season of its release. It is absolutely not relevant what your perceived value is out of an average box. Production costs, UD's profit margin, distributor mark-ups, LCS mark-ups...these are the things that set wax prices, not how much an individual is willing to pay for a card on eBay.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

You do however, have the right to analyze the costs and benefits, which you have clearly done, and choose not to support a product.
There will always be collectors who will drop $500+ on a pack of The Cup without hesitation. There will also be others who will not pay more than $2 for a pack of cards. Essentially it comes down to personal choice.

When a product is new, its sold for whatever the market will bear. As it gets older, supply and demand will start to kick in and if lots of people share your perceptiom, you'll see a price drop as dealers look to sell to free up inventoey and cash for the next item.
Check around the forums. Look for posts like "itg vs ud" and "panini vs ud". You'll see a lot of people support a company just because of its name. Just because a product has low quality doesn't mean that it won't sell. Sometimes the "brand" has a value as well. Thats why when companies make asset sheets, they include a value of their trade mark, even if they wouldn't normally sell it.

If you get $35 out of spx you are doing great...I'd say closer to $15 average...
Here in canada it's $130+ ....great value...
Anyway, UD sold all to distributors so UD don't care at this point. ..distributors sold almost all to dealers/LCS so distributors don't care that much either...Lcs will have this on the shelf for at least a year or two till they might mark it down but they just wait as slowly a sucker comes along and buys up the inventory which they will...this is how the chain works....
Lucky you are in US so fire sale will start faster as they want to get rid of this junk as it's taking up capital and space...canadians will sit on it forever till suckers buy it all at full price...
Spx shadowbox auto selanne...barely pays for half the box...Odds of you getting ain't good....it even only books for $80...
How many cards in the set book over box price?
Let's not even talk ebay sv
For that box go buy yourself a gretzky auto....

I am with Kuba on this one. I like the other view points but 14-15 Upper Deck hockey is not worth it to break. I understand it not all about how a card will sell for on ebay but some of the value on these products is crazy compared to box prices. I couldn't justify paying 75 for a 14-15 spx box let alone $130. Something is wrong with the hobby when there is one company making overpriced products. I wish it would be logical to break 14-15 hockey but it is not. Cheers

I agree! What a bad year! Wanted to try a box of series 2 last week, I asked the lady how much? 106$!!! Stayed on the shelf. When the prices are to high for certain years I just buy boxes from earlier years at cheaper prices. I might try Ice though.

Your math is pretty much bang on. Secondary sales values have NOTHING to do with box prices (as others have said). In 2 or 3 years, sure.... whatever is still out there... it will get marked down. Until then? good luck.
Of course, replace "14-15" with "13-14" or pretty much any other year..... I would bet 95% of products released over the last decade, yield well under 50% (on average) in terms of secondary market values, vs the cost of the box.

Secondary prices 'should' have something to do with box prices in my opinion but I guess Upper Deck determines a price they want to charge and if retailers and customers pay it why stop with the up charging. Pretty smart business by Upper Deck.

Never has the average resale value of a box been any sort of equation towards what the actual sticker price on the box is. Never has, never will.
14/15 SPx is a newer product, people still buy it ..... why would anyone want to lower the price to help the consumer?
Boxes tend to lose value from age, and if a company loses their license / goes out of business. Most Panini products are a fraction of what they originally started at because of this. On the other hand, boxes prices can go up as well. Look at almost any 05/06 UD Product, I believe 02/03 and 03/04 Premier collection are still quite high as well ... compared to what they were released at.
On that same token, im sure a box of 15/16 SPx ( unless they change the entire configuration of the box ) wont start out of the gates much over the price of this year .... even with a strong rookie class. I believe 05/06 and 07/08 ( both very strong classes ) came out in that just over $100 range. Some years rookie classes are bad, while others are much stronger. Youre gonna have a hell of a time recouping your money on weak rookie years.
