    What do you do when.....

your PC guy gets traded? or worse leaves as a free agent cause of the money? and worse still goes to a team you hate (as in the habs - sorry).

i know the expectations we place on pro athletes is unrealistic (an understatement) BUT THEY MAKE OUR TEAM - OUR TEAM!
do you root for the team first (i do).
or maybe root for a team because of specific player?

for example many Leaf fans really liked Dion. those same fans HATE Ottawa, (cant really blame them for that tho). so do they suddenly toss their Dion collection to the wolves? do they suddenly pick up a new team to root for?

i used to collect Clarke MacArthur and Damian Rhodes (retired) but when they both ended up in Ottawa.. well it wasnt the same. is it just me. i would absolutely HATE it if my favorite player got traded to Montreal. sorry habs fans but its true. would HATE it more if he left and went there for the money. kinda seems like prostitution to me. anything for a buck. i know there is no loyalty among team owners but you dont see too many guys retiring from the team they started out with. i'm sure there are reasons other than money but its tuff on us fans.

Chad Owens (Argos) just signed with the rival Ti-Cats. thats what prompted this thread. Argos/Ti-Cats = Hatfields/McCoys.

It's tough. Real tough. I had the perfect synchronicity with the Gorges collection--local guy that I watched in junior makes it with the Habs. So when he was traded it was sad. And with that Buffalo team, he has even less value than he did whilst in Montreal and even fewer cards being produced. So it's pretty much back-fill whatever is still needed from the Habs era and slowly put together the O-Pee-Chee releases with him in a Sabres uniform.

For pretty much any of the other guys that have come and gone in Montreal that I've had small PC stuff happening--see ya. Dump and chase just like Therrien likes the team to do instead of a strong possession game.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

My PC players was traded from the Ducks (easy enough team to cheer for) to The Sens (I live in ONT and hated both the leafs and sens equally). But he is my PC player for specific reasons, non of which were the team he played for and so not only did I stick with the player but now due to the fact he is there the Sens are now my #2 team (behind the rangers) Its hard to want personal success for my guy while at the same team hoping for failure for the team itself, so I sucked it up and joined the sens army
    :)

That being said, if one of my favorite ball players ends up in a Red Sox uniform they are dead to me

I have struggled with this question looking back in time at player PCs. I have thought for a while about collecting Adam Graves, but I can't bring myself to buy a bunch of Sharks cards. I am a Team PC guy, so this normally doesn't affect me when players get traded, but it is definitely something that has kept me from switching to a player PC.

    i hear that.

and from the other perspective any value his (or a semi star for example) cards had because of the team he was on suddenly took a big hit. i know we dont collect players for the $$ value but still ...

Seems to always happen to Toronto haha. ALthough they do have some of the best rivalries so it makes it hurt more I guess.

I guess it depends on the player. Im a Jets fan, and lets say Buff left to go to the Wild (being a Minnesota boy I couldnt blame him) and I would still chear for him. But if he went to the Leafs or Habs Id have a hard time rooting for him. Either way I probably wouldnt collect new stuff of him and possible unload some PC stuff.

On the other hand I had an opportunity to hang out with Ben Scrivens this fall when he was coming through Winnipeg playing for Bakersfield. So for him I really dont care what team he ends up on I just want to see him successful. But thats more on a personal level than being a fan because he was on my home team. So for me Im going to collect what I can of his and him changing teams doesnt affect that.

I battle this question a bit with some of the guys Im collecting. I know I only am because there a Jet. And if they were to not be a Jet one day it wouldnt hold the same value. So Im trying to find guys I either have a personal connection to more than the hometown guy, because that seems to change far too often sometimes .

Well, I think I can relate.

Stempniak has had the following journey

    St. Louis
    Toronto
    Phoenix (Arizona)
    Calgary
    Pittsburgh
    NY Rangers
    Winnipeg
    New Jersey.

And guess what? The PC has lived on, through all towns and all times he's been through. My advice to anyone is to pick a player who you will collect regardless of where he ends up. I HATE the Leafs, but still supported him there. My only catch is I refuse to get a Leafs jersey. I have STL, PHX, CAL, PIT, and soon to be WPG. Missing NYR & NJ currently, but I just can't bring myself to get a Leafs jersey. He gets moved at the deadline a lot, so whenever he gets thrown to a playoff team, I'll usually pull for them in the playoffs (never works). But I hope that one day, the lesser known hockey player from the Buffalo, NY area will hoist the Cup, and hopefully bring it home.

for example many Leaf fans really liked Dion.

There were actually some Leafs fans that liked Phaneuf? They must have been very quiet about it because most posts I ever saw blasted him.

But I understand your dilemma. I have two game-used Sergei Gonchar jerseys on my wall, and when he went to Pittsburgh, it was really hard not to take them down. That one hurt, especially because he was on their Cup team.

It's a dilemma for for most player collectors. I understand that pro sports in general is a business, but it is still a pain when a player you like / collect either gets traded or leaves via free agency to a team you can't stand. I look at my home town Detroit Tigers and the issue they ran into with pitcher Max Scherzer. He left for the money. Washington was willing to pay more for his services than the tigers were. Now that he's been gone I don't root for him, but I don't root against him either. For me once a player leaves my teams I don't care about what they do.
