That sentence pretty much encapsulates the problem with the BCS.

you want to know why not.... those contracts with the BCS games need big names for TV RATINGS... that is why those smaller market teams will not get anywhere... Tostitos needs a huge team in there so they can advertise and make the money back they spent to get their name plastered all over everything

Mitch, fair point, but Louisville is NOT a bigger market than NY. And up here, NY has embraced Rutgers. I know there's not the traditional following for RU that most of the other schools have, but past success is playing too much of a role in the rankings. I think the early season rankings are too influential, personally, and I'd LOVE to see them not have rankings until week 6 or 7.

Rutgers still has to play against West Virginia AT West Virginia. Win that and they should get themselves a BCS bid.

maybe true.. but new york doesnt influence the south where football is HUGE.... which would draw more attention... Rutgers/OSU or Texas/OSU... For me honestly... im not that big of a college FB fan and i probably wont be interested in the game if rutgers is playing... i will probably have it on in the background but i would def watch it if two powerhouses were playing... and i dont know for sure but i would bet a lot of people feel the same way

But having a Rutgers in there does a couple things.
First off, it brings in some casual fans who want to see an historic upset. And second, I think it has a lot of fans who want to root for the underdog. And it also brings the NY area back into college football. Frankly, nobody really cares about it anymore up here.
Personally, I don't think Rutgers is as good as half of the teams with 1 loss (Florida, Texas, OSU/Mich loser, UCS, etc), but the fact that a team can go undefeated in a BCS conference and not even be considered for the national championship is a joke.

very good point.. but for me as a casual football fan the only way i would be interested is if it is a 3 point game i might catch the last few minutes of the game... i think the worst that can happen though if Rutgers gets in... gets blown out and what...

anyways this is always a gripe of mine about College FB... there is never a clear cut Champion

no one in any of these ratings/bcs talks has mentioned one of the biggest factors that draws in an audience....GAMBLING!! there would be more money put on a rutgers vs. michigan/osu game than any other championship game....i can almost guarantee that!! gamblers dont care who is playing, they are looking for the $$$....and i disagree that the nation wouldn't embrace rutgers in a championship game....this country thrives on the underdogs!!! we love the rocky's and the rudy's of the sports world!!! i dont see that as a fair excuse....the only valid thing is the sponsors $$ and i think people would be surprised at the draw...tutall, you may not be a big college football fan, but most are....it is just like the superbowl to most....it doesn't matter who is playing, you watch it just cause of what it is. if the BCS really cared about whether a big east school would get a nice draw, then why does the BCS recognize them as a BCS conference??

as far as them just getting a BCS birth, it is pretty much a given....the big east winner is guaranteed a BCS birth, and even if rutgers loses to WV, they still win the big east if they win out....its not like the non bcs schools who have to be in the top 8 or whatever to get a bid (like boise i believe).

Keep in mind that if the Big East was set up the way it is now, they might not have been included - they probably would have, but might have been forced to prove themselves. Miami, Va Tech, and BC were big influences as to them getting put into the BCS conference (especially the first two teams).

Also, good point on the gambling.

there were actually talks when those teams went to the acc that the big east would not be bowl eligible, and the BCS voted to keep them in there in the new agreement that starts this year!! they had the option to opt out and didn't!! look, like i argued a week ago, last year WV won the Big East - Georgia won the SEC....played in the sugar bowl and WV won (the best of the big east beat the best of what is considered the best football conference out there)....i mean seriously, what else can they possibly do to get just a little respect??
