10/26/03 update: UCLA 20, Arizona St. 13
In a game dominated by UCLA defense, the UCLA offense did just well enough to win.
Freshman RB Maurice Drew had an incredible run, with 18 carries for about 173 yards, and an 83-yard scamper for a TD, longest TD run in Bruins history for a true freshman.
QB Matt Moore, in his first game back as starter, aftering a bone bruise/ankle sprain in the Oklahoma game, had a nice TD pass (I think it was to bragg)...but got smacked around a bit for 3 sacks.
Generally, Moore did alright, but he will have to show more mobility when we play Wash. St. and USC.
UCLA has a TREMENDOUS defense, allowing 16 points/game, with Dave Ball and his 11.5 sacks leading the nation.
UCLA and Wash. St are tied for the Pac-10 lead, both with no losses in Pac-10 play.....
but UCLA's schedule is heavily back-loaded with tough games on the road ------ #7 ranked Wash St and #4 ranked USC (note that #3 Va Tech lost to W. Virginia, so both Pac-10 schools are headed higher)
next up is a game at Stanford, one we should win with relative ease before the showdowns with tougher Pac-10 teams

it was marked at the beginning of the year, when I get my new calendars
all games against USC are fun and exciting.
of course, only in football does USC really have that much of an advantage

LOL, yeah, take a look at the history of the lexus gauntlet trophy they compete for in all sports. UCLA's won it all of it's 3 or so years in existence.

USC, if you take away their football program, really doesn't have much going for them.
Then, when you look at the neighborhood that the campus is in, you wonder why the rich alumni of USC don't do something about it.
At UCLA, going out at night is cool
At USC -- you don't wanna drift too far

If you don't go too far away from the Shrine auditorium your in good shape. You only risk the chance of getting stabbed around there. All the gun toters are a couple of blocks away. I think it's called the Shrine auditorium. It's that arabian looking building that they use for a lot of comic book and card show conventions.

OOOOh, tough loss to Stanford eh? Hopefully they'll be bummed out when the Trojans come to town.

11/1/03 update: UCLA loses to Stanford 21-14, in a game pitting 4-0 UCLA vs 0-4 Stanford in Pac-10 standings.
With Wash St. having a really good chance to lose to USC (which they did), we'd have the chance for the overall lead in the Pac-10 race.
Instead, we laid a big farking egg!!!
once again, someone ran a kickback 90 yards on us, and the dude was totally UNTOUCHED!! Talk about major league breakdown on the not-so-special teams
Then, there was the inept offensive line, which allowed 8 QB sacks...sure, a few was the fault of Matt Moore, but once a QB is sacked 8 times, it's the OL fault!!
Defense played well again, allowing only 14 points (remember that 7 of the 21 total points was from special teams).
well, there are now 3 teams with 1-loss in Pac 10: USC, Wash ST. and UCLA.
If UCLA beats Wash St. and USC, we go to the Rose Bowl, even if we lose to Oregon!!!!!
Chances are, if you can't beat Stanford, you're not going to have a chance against #3 ranked USC.
But the beauty of sports is: as long as a game is fairly refereed (and there's no collusion b/t refs like in ice skating), ANY team can win ANY time.
We go up to Washington St. next week!

11/8 update: Wash St 31+, UCLA 13
boy, Wazzzou turned the ball over 7 times, their QB complete something like 3 passes in 12 attempts for about 40-50 yards, and UCLA still got blistered!!
We have BAD special teams and BAD offense.
the defense did a fine job, and we were down 14-6 with 3 minutes left in 1st half.
Cougars punted the ball, UCLA's Bragg ran it all the way to the 30 yard line, only to fumble the freaking ball, which was returned all the way to the Bruins 11-yard line, and Cougars promptly ran it in on the next play on offense
Then once we got the ball back, Moore got hit from behind, fumbled, and Cougars recovered at about the 9 yard line. On the next play, they again ran it in
within 2 minutes, a 14-6 deficit for UCLA turned into a 28-6 deficit
at the start of 2nd half, UCLA defense forced a turnover just 1 minute into play, and got the ball on the 25 yard line, only to have the stinking offense give it right back on an INT
it's time to put Matt Moore (who's more talented) on the bench, and play Drew Olsen (who's a tad bit less talented, but plays so much better and has more experience b/c he's played in more games)!!!!
Once upon a time, Ryan Leaf was thought of as having incredible talent --- and we all know how that turned out!
ugh!
what an ugly game
next up is Oregon
then USC -- we're gonna be a 17 1/2+ underdogs to the Trojans

well, Coach Dorrell has just announced today that Drew Olson will be the starter vs Oregon
good choice!!
Olson may be a tad bit less talented than Matt Moore, but he's more adept at making the plays
UCLA BADLY needs to win Saturday to have a shot at a good bowl game
the USC game is a no-brainer
