    COMC and Tarrifs

Just got an email from COMC stating they're raising their "duty" fee, or whatever they call it, from 5% to 30% for anything crossing the border into Canada from the US. I guess I won't be buying from them for the foreseeable future.

It's for sure going to put a pause on my order shipments. I've been building up my inventory for a while now, waiting for EPack to make available the 4 Nations Faceoff stuff along with the PWHL Showcase and so forth. It's probably going to be around 100 cards by the time I'm ready to cash out, but it's gonna be costly.

I requested a shipment about 2 weeks ago, anticipating this.

I made a request for 131 cards three weeks ago, my duty charge wasn't big at the time as most of the cards were smaller in value with more than half between 2-3 cent to 10-15 cent cards, additionally I left cards that were of a bigger value that I was planning to use as traders and put them up for sale on COMC instead. I was prepared for a possible charge but I haven't received an email in regards to any further charges on this package or even notification of this change for potential future packages.

The one thing that bothers me is that I can't find the tariff code for trading cards on the tariff list, the code is not on there as an item to be tariffed on the list of eligible items from 13 March, and the only additional ones listed so far are on automobiles from the US. So I don't know why they are already increasing charges. I'm not saying they are jumping the gun or using this as an excuse to charge more, maybe I haven't found the most updated page on the Department of Finance announcements. Does anybody have a Government of Canada document saying 25% tariffs on hockey cards?

As per the email they are suggesting they HAVE BEEN paying the tariff on behalf of the buyer already. Here's the body of the email:

As you’re likely already aware, U.S. President Trump announced yesterday a series of sweeping tariffs on imports, effective immediately.

Until now, unlike many other companies in the collectibles industry, COMC & COMC Consignment Corp (a.k.a. COMC Canada) has not introduced new surcharges or altered its operations, with COMC customers in Canada still being able to take full advantage of our weekly cross-border shipments to avoid international shipping costs.

With no near-term changes in U.S. policy expected and Canadian retaliatory tariffs likely to remain in place, it’s not sustainable for COMC to continue covering the 25% increase in duty fees as it has been doing. As a result, COMC has no choice but to raise its duty fee on cross-border shipments from 5% to 30%, effective immediately.

How you can avoid these new surcharges:

We greatly value our customers in Canada. As such, we wanted to reach out to you and encourage you to keep storing your current and future cards in our warehouse in Washington State until there is resolution and/or clarity around the current trade climate.

By keeping your cards in COMC’s warehouse, you can avoid these new surcharges. Your cards will remain safe and secure with us.

We will continue to monitor this volatile situation and keep you updated on further developments. We want to do everything we can to help our COMC family in Canada navigate these changes. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly by emailing [email protected].

I've read the email from others, all I said was that I had requested a shipment 3+ weeks ago and I have not been emailed or notified about a new charge(yet?). My additional question was about why COMC is claiming they have been paying a tariff when trading cards have not been added to the tariff list as of either March 13, or April 3, so I asked if anybody had an updated document from the Gov where cards are on the tariff list. Now the top loaders and shipping material may apply for tariffs, but that would be a small part of the charge as they ship across the border and finish packing there for Canada Post or Courier.

    Look at code 4911.99.00.00

I'm aware of the harmonized system code & .30 under that section is the one that specifically counts towards trading cards. The list of items from the beginning of March seeing tariffs issued by the Government of Canada in response to the US tariffs does not have that code (4911.99.00) on the list, & the newest added tariffs from the beginning of April are all for automobiles built in the US.

The first list of items subject to 25% tariffs coming into Canada from the US was effective as of March 13 and published at this link:
    https://www.canada.ca/en/department-...h-13-2025.html
Going to that link and entering the 4911.99.00 code, the items are not on the list of currently tariffed items.

    CCT List 13 March.jpgCCT List 13 4911.99.00 March.jpg

I have not been able to find a document or announcement from CRA or Finance Department that cards are on the tariff list. All I was asking for was if anybody had an actual document where the harmonized system code for trading cards is on an applicable list of tariffs, that would be helpful in order to find out what tariffs are going to apply so if COMC notifies me I can ask for a breakdown for what the additional charges are for.

Just kicking this up. A lot of the cards I had in my E-Pack awaiting physical transfer have now been made ready, so as a lark I went in and checked to see what the cost would be to ship my 120 cards out. $119USD.

    Yikes.

What is the breakdown on that Richard? how many have the .25 fee vs. it is in the price of the card. Do you have a declared value, Was any epack or was everything bought off the COMC site, how many top loaders, and which shipping method? COMC announced today that starting last week, tracked shipping will be by FedEx for the foreseeable future until CP has a deal, FedEx will be more expensive, but on top of that any additional duties, tariffs, or CBSA fees that get applied will be the responsibility of the receiver. Economy is by Canada Post, so if that is what you selected it will be mailed, by stuck in limbo until CP goes back to work.

My 131 cards I received a few weeks ago I had sent in the lowest tracked, I had to pay the .25 handling fee for 95 of the cards, and I had top loaders for 47 of the cards. My duties/shipping charge was only $80.71 USD, so my shipping was only about $35USD everything else was duties and fees.
