Partial Birth Abortion: Thoughts?

This is a children friendly video of Partial Birth Abortion demonstrated with a baby doll. Yes, this happened in American by the thousands BEFORE Bush made it illegal. Can you guess how Obama and McCain voted on this issue?



Obama's Stance:

In February 2004, his wife, Michelle, sent out a fundraising letter, which actually stated her concern over the rise of conservatism in the Country, and that the ‘so-called’ partial-birth abortion was a legitimate medical procedure that should be protected.

Presidential hopeful and outspoken abortion advocate Barack Obama argued on Sunday that the partial birth abortion ban is unacceptable without exceptions to protect the life or health of the mother.

"On an issue like partial birth abortion, I strongly believe that the state can properly restrict late-term abortions. I have said so repeatedly. All I've said is we should have a provision to protect the health of the mother, and many of the bills that came before me didn't have that," Obama told FOX News Sunday.


However, multiple health professions have testified in the past that partial birth abortion is neither necessary to save a mother's life, nor safe for the woman undergoing the procedure.


The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) could "conceive of no circumstance in which it (partial-birth abortion) would be needed to save the life or preserve the health of a mother," according to a June 2003 letter to Congress from AAPS member Dr. Jane Orient.
Furthermore, partial birth abortion "carries the risk of maternal injury or death, as by uterine rupture or laceration and hemorrhage."

McCain's Stance

In a letter to the National Right to Life Committee, McCain detailed a long anti-abortion record, including his sponsorship of the effort to overturn President Clinton’s veto of a bill banning late-term procedures called “partial birth” abortions. What I find funny is how Obama and other people FOR partial birth abortions say, "it doesn't take into account of the health of the mother." So, 90% of the baby is out and killed. How is simply pulling the head out of the mother a risk to her life? The baby gets delivered! How is delivering it DEAD going to make the mother safe?

i got to about the point where he's got the baby doll all the way out, but the head is still in...couldn't finish...It's not as barbaric as a lobotomy, but then again who am I to say...

the way i understand it is there is a provision in the law that still allows it to be performed if a woman's health is in danger? Also, I think the chances of survival for a baby born in the 2nd trimester is extremely low...

i see what you're saying for sure...but again, i'm not sure if a baby has a very good chance of survival at 26 weeks

With todays technology it is very possible. Even if the chance is 1%, who are we to kill it? There are tens of thousands of people willing to adopt. The baby GETS delivered in a partial birth abortion. The baby is delivered to the point that its arms legs and body are delivered. One more second and a pull and the baby is delivered. Instead the baby's brains are sucked out. How in the world is the mother in danger?

Whether the baby can live past any age is not what Obama opposes. He says "health of the mother," not wether the baby can survive. And it can especially in late term partial birth abortions.

So basically what Dr. Jane Orient is saying that it's more dangerous to have the procedure performed than it would be to just give birth? Either way, it's probably best to word any law about partial birth abortion to have a provision to protect the health of the mother in certain cases.

The vast majority of these are performed because the mother changes her mind. That is it. Pro-choice all the way. I could see a case for abortion in the first trimester. Meaning you are killing something that is not delivered. But with partial birth abortion you are delivering the baby except it is killed first.
