Here are some verses that would argue for the essential-ness of baptism. verses in this post, comments on them in the next one.
Acts 2:37-38:
37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
acts 8:35-38
35Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
36As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?"[a] 38And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.

acts 9:18: Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized
Lydia's conversion:
acts 16:14-15 The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. 15When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home
philippian jailer: acts 16:30-33
He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
31They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household." 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized
Romans 6:3-4

it says in the old testament that all plants are available to eat.
the problem with marijuana is that while is has medicinal value to some, the majority of the people want it for the mind altering reasons and not the medicine reasons

when the people ask what they must do, the apostles reply to repent and be baptized
acts 8:35-38
after philip tells the Eunuch about Jesus, the eunuch knows that he should be baptized
acts 9:18
when Saul becomes paul, he is immediately baptized
lydia accepted Pauls message and then was baptized
philippian jailer:
when he asks what he must do to be saved, Paul replies to belief in the Lord and even in the middle of the night he was immediately baptized
romans 6: the first half of romans 6 relates our baptism with with Christ's death. Paul refers to those who have been baptized.
1 Peter: discusses that it is through the waters of baptism that we are saved.
not listed in the previous post is Galatians 3:26
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
paul clearly states that those who are baptized have clothed themselves with christ

my problem is that I think the number of those who really need it for medicinal purposes is a lot less than those who get presciptions for it. If someone actually needs it I don't really have a problem with it.

while I don't agree with you on the legalization of marijuana, I do agree that more damage is done as a result of alcohol than any other type of drug. I lived the proof of that growing up!

dont you think people should be able to do as they wish, so long as it doesnt interfere with others? i mean how does a gay couple affect my life? or somebody smoking herb in their living room affect me? or what movies some people watch affect me?
