Southwest Missouri is a pretty nice place. The weather is a bit schizophrenic (extreme heat in the summer with rather cold winters), but the cost of living is one of the lowest in the nation. People are fairly friendly and down to earth, but admittedly, there is a bit of redneck stereotype (the Joplin area has the lowest literacy rate of all cities in Missouri; as an English major, this was alarming to me).
