New computer issues
Hey all -
I have a brand new, high-tech computer. That's the good news. The bad news is a lot of the stuff I used to have (1998-2003 era) is no longer compatible with this new technology. For instance, the scanner I used to get pictures of my cards up (Visioneer OneTouch 7100 USB) is likely not compatible with Windows Vista, although there may be a loophole around it from a technology forum I visited (my dad and I will have to look into that more - most people are saying the Visioneer scanner will not work at all on Vista). My old 32-bit Paint Shop Pro 7 picture-editing program also is not compatible, so I replaced it with Gimp 2, which looks like it does a lot of the same functions.
What this all means primarily is I probably won't be able to get any scans up of new cards for awhile since I used the scanner and Paint Shop Pro 7 to get all those uploaded. My printer also no longer works, so my family will eventually have to get a new one (this means I can't print any card transactions in trades and will have to write all that information in manually). In non-card news, I also had to find a replacement for MS Word 2000. I saved about $300 finding Paint Shop Pro and MS Word replacements, but the printer can't be saved, and it's doubtful the scanner will be, either. It's really amazing how much technology changes in about half a decade.

Yeah, I'm thinking a new scanner is probably in order. I do like Vista and want to keep that running.

Vista is great. been using it since they first release..
A new scanner/printer is a good option, they are pretty cheap now too. I bought a combo with scanner/printer/fax for $60
There's a free software called openoffice, which you can download directly from microsoft.com if im not mistaken. its great, and is just like microsoft office, but free !

paint.net is a sweet photo editor that is free..
i know i came across this in my search the other day online for a friend but cant remember the name.
There is a free piece of software that is supposed to be compatible with vista and works with all scanners that arent vista supported.
i think you can find it googling vista scanning software or something like that.

Frantic - Yeah, I noticed some scanners on Amazon are selling around $50 and have decent reviews. For word processors, Open Office is what I got, and it's great. Very similar to MS Word, and it opens old MS Word files so I can edit them as needed.
jonny - Sounds promising; I'll look that up. Thanks.

I would probably make the switch back to XP. I've heard nothing but bad stories from people about it, and from what I'm told of Microsoft Office 2007 (all that works on Vista I believe, they royally screwed it up when the designed Office 07)

The Paint Shop Pro 7 should work in Vista. It works perfectly for me.

I have a 64-bit version of Vista, not 32-bit. 64-bit completely prohibits all 32-bit programs such as PSP 7.
But I am proud to say that I now have a Kodak scanner/printer dual that works, and Gimp 2 is able to do all that PSP 7 does! I can scan all my cards again and print documents again!
