I'm actually a big fan of Michael Jackson. Yeah he is a freak, but his music was great.

tiger pimp....just out of curiosity...did you leave michael jackson off because he's quite possibly the weirdest human being alive...or is it because your not a fan of his music or he doesn't rank with some of the other singers on here?
i know i already bugged you about marvin & marley....im not trying to get you to put MJ on your list, was just curious as to why he wasn't on there?....either way, marvin gaye is my choice so i wouldnt have voted michael anyway
Woops...missed this. I thought about young Michael too...he is a freak, but I didn't take that into account. He was a good singer, just not as legendary as the ones on the list...again, just my opinion.
I can;t understand why Axl Rose is there and not Freddie Mercury or Luciano Pavarotti.
Mercury or Pavarotti. Get rid of Rose....not even close to being "Greatest Singer."
EDIT-I see Mercury on there..lol.
Same way with Plant and Bon Scott....ok singers, but I don't see why they'd be on a list for "Greatest Singer."
Pavarotti is not on there because I know next to nothing about opera/classical singers and I can't rightly put one in based on name and reputation at the risk of leaving a better one (or more) off the list. Like I said, this is by no means an exhaustive list and everyone has differing opinions. If we were to do a true list of the best singers ever, there would probably be few to none we've actually heard of. And the other side of that, most of the people on this list wouldn't even be thought of in a true best singer list. For this list, I basically looked at the big name artists with distinctive voices...I don't think Axl Rose is a great singer, but you can't deny that he's got a unique voice (which is why Bon Scott is on there as well).
Leaving this open over the weekend for more votes, will end it on Monday.

I think its more about Best Pop Culture Singer. Most opera/classical singers would blow most of these choices out of the water.

Well, I think that's all the voting we're gonna get. I'm pretty surprised at some of the results, especially some of the ones who got little to no vote (mainly Etta James and Van Morrison). Also pretty surprised by the winner...
And our SCF Golden Pipes award goes to The King, Elvis Pressley
. He just edged Frankie by 1 vote...I'll be dropping the trophy off at Graceland sometime soon I'm sure

Since George Michael isn't on the list, I'm going to have to go with Freddie Mercury.

Well, we do have a younger crowd here whose musical tastes don't tend toward older stuff, so I am not surprised Etta and Van Morrison got fewer votes. They are also less universal than Elvis, Sinatra, and Aretha, whose hits still get played regularly on oldies stations.
I actually got to see Graceland in 1992 when I was seven or eight. It was great.
