I'm not sure how accurate Wiki Answers is, but 70% of NFL players are black and 80% of NBA players are black.
Regardless of the actual number, you make a very good point.

Wow...I didn't realize it would be anywhere close to that much. I was thinking 40-50%. So if we want to get technical about it, people should be complaining about the disproportionately small percentage of white players in the NFL and NBA...74% of the general population only make up 30% of the NFL and 20% of the NBA.

Why is there a rule that you have to interview so many minorities, but not a rule that you have to let so many white people try out? I know that anyone can try out, but shouldnt there be a rule, just to make things "fair".

no, i dont have any problem with black scholarships or black miss america...why should I? I don't really see the need to get rid of them...i think affirmative action is outdated and could be eliminated because i believe in hiring the best person for the job and i don't like quotas...the rooney rule in football can be gone too because it has accomplished what it was created to do...
but the poster i was responding to was wondering why there are black fraternities and colleges...I would think people would at least understand why there are black institutions...should we ever get rid of historically black colleges like Howard or Grambling?
ESPN is good at picking up these stories, and they are ridiculous...they do make it seem like blacks are excluded, and i dont buy it

I have no problem with universities that are predominantly minority. My problem is with things that are for one race only. As another poster mentioned, there is no "white miss america", there is no "white scholarship fund." Anyone who attempted to start these things would be protested and sued (IMO). Yet no one has a problem that these exact things exist for other races.
I asked if you had a problem simply because IMO those things are racist and wondered if you felt differently. thanks

I never understood the quota rule in the NFL for having to interview black candidates. Like the lions a few years ago, if the team already knows who they want to hire, why waste both their time and say Dennis Greene's time by bringing him there for what amounts to a meaningless get together ? Just stupid and I'd be insulted if a team did that to me when the writing was on the wall about who they were hiring.
I'm waiting for ESPN or HBO to feature something about the abuse the white players take in the NBA going back from Rudy Tomjanovich and Kermit Washington. Just last week two more ugly incidents occured : Harpering getting a ridiculous cheap shot late in a game from behind & Zach Randolph sucker punching someone. White NBA players seem to take alot of the hard fouls, cheap shots and sucker punches over the years. Coincidence ? Doubtful. Of course ESPN would never dare start such a story since they are the NBA's biggest promotion machine going today. It just gets ignored. I think the players just accept it and move on.
I personally don't think its a big deal or a reason to do a featured story but I do get tired of everything being blown up thats white on black. I think its all non-issue but just like in the games themselves, if you're going to call it then call it both ways.

as far as I know, there hasn't been a Miss Black America since 1997...it was started in 1968, 47 years after Miss America had started and still had not featured a single black contestant...they were barred from entering the competition, so therefore it's not hard to figure out why there was a Miss Black America in the first place...essentially there was a "Miss White America" for 50 years
as far as the United Negro College Fund or other black scholarship programs....if you don't like that idea, don't donate to it...simple as that right?

I might be the only one that shares this opinion but I think racism is still very much alive in sports. Maybe not on the field, but look at NCAA Football. There is only a handful of black head coaches in D1 Football. There wasn't a black coach in the SEC until a few years ago.
If the majority of coaches were once players, and the majority of players were an ethnicity other than white, shouldn't there be more than 4-5 non white head coaches in D1 Football? Plenty of non white coaches are qualified, how come they aren't being hired?

the rooney rule was warranted when it was adopted...the purpose of the rule was simply to get minority candidates a chance to interview and prepare themselves for the process...but i agree the rule has met it's goals, and can now be removed...the proof is in the recent hires...black candidates are now being hired without a white candidate being interviewed...and Mike Tomlin, a black man, is the current owner of the Lombardi Trophy
however, the college game could use the rooney rule for a couple years...it's kind of absurd, especially with the numbers that renegade posted, that there could only be 2 or 3 black head coaches out of 119...just think...only 20 years ago Randall Cunningham was still trying to convince America that a black man could play Quarterback...the stereotype has always been that black people are dumb, and couldn't hold a position that required brains like QB or head coach
