Im not entirely sure why we use a ball. Some leagues around here use a puck, and others use a ball. Personally I grew up using a ball almost exclusively so Im pretty ok with using one now lol. Street hockey around here is usually played with a ball, so naturally alot of us that play organized roller hockey prefer a ball over a puck.
The age "limit" is supposed to be 18+ but there are a few players under 18 who play in our league rather than the 14-17 league because there is better competition.
As for hockey background, it varies from player to player, and from team to team. On the Mongooses we have a few players who played all through high school. Our one defensemen was a captain at my HS, and we went to states/nationals every year (also plays division 1 college roller hockey). Another Mongoose is only 16, but is one of the better players currently at his school. There are also players who play junior A/B ice hockey that are pretty good. Personally though, this is the most organized hockey I have ever played. I would say a large portion of those who play are just guys who play roller/street hockey from the time they are 3 years old. I know that probably doesnt make it much clearer to you lol but the skill range is fairly broad in our league. Definitely some pretty talented guys though.
As for "structure", im not really sure what you mean lol. Feel free to explain what you mean, and I'll be more than happy to answer this, and other qquestions you may have.

Finally an update for this thread............
So we have played 3 games since I last posted...
2 Weeks ago- We played our friends/rivals who we went to school with. After a hard fought 3 periods, the score was 3-3 (very low for roller hockey). We then went to a 5 minute overtime and both teams failed to end it so we went to a shootout. After a 5-round shootout, that included me and my brother beating the goalie only to see our shots trickle just wide. Finally, they scored on their 5th shooter and we failed to counter it and lose 4-3 in one of the most epic games in Mongoose history
Last Week- Last week the Mongooses greatly underachieved. We have a problem of "playing to our opponents" that often tends to cause us to lose to teams we should beat easily while beating the best teams in the league. We played one of the weaker teams in the league, and with an uninspired effort on our part, and a weak game from our goaltender, we lost 9-8 to fall to 5-3
This week- This post isnt all bad news...we had 2 games this week...
Game 1- Monday we got to play the team first mentioned in this thread that beat us 4-3 in a shootout. Another amazing game in which both teams held "commanding" leads at various points. We managed to come back from a 5-3 deficit going into the 3rd to capture a well earned 8-7 win.
Game 2- Tuesday we got to play an extra game because another team couldnt play their game. We played a new team that we knew very little about. They scored 9 seconds in to take the very early lead. Things were very close early on and it seemed we might have another 1 goal game on our hands. We were VERY wrong. The mongooses threw it into high gear and plowed our way to an 11-1 victory. Yes, 11 unanswered goals lol. Every once in a while you need one of thes confidence games where you feel you can do no wrong. For the mongooses, this was yesterday lol.
I have personally been playing on an injured ankle most of the year (basketball of all things lol) and have felt useless almost every game. Currently I sit 5th in Mongoose scoring (first time not being the leading scorer). Also, I am usually in the top 5 in league scoring but currently sit well outside the top 10. Yesterday though, I finally felt I could play a physical game despite my weak ankle. Im glad that I was finally able to win battles, and skate in a way more typical of my style of play. I love not feeling useless lol
The Mongooses now sit a 7-3 which puts us in..............1st place!!! Hopefully we can use the momentum from this week throughout the rest of the season

Even though nobody responds to this thread anymore :( lol....
The Mongooses had another game tonight. We played one of our best overall team games in a while. Pulling off a nice 10-4 victory against a pretty decent team (The team we beat 8-7 last week, and lost to a in a shootout a few weeks ago). To me this shows potential improvement as a team. With this win, we were also able to hold our spot atop the league. Pretty exciting as we have never been in this position. Also, we were the first team to surpass the 100 goal mark on the season.
Mongooses 8-3 record

Sounds like the team is back on the upswing. Everyone just needs to stay motivated, I guess.

Thanks for the update Joseph. I came on to break the news of our "presidents trophy" season lol. Definitely our best session yet as a team.
A mongoose is a beast quite simply. Its a small, "cute" looking animal that looks alot like a squirrel. I just found this small bit of info..
"Some species, such as the Indian Mongoose, are popularly used to fight and kill venomous snakes, even King Cobras. They are able to do this because of their agility and cunning, and their thick coat, but typically avoid the cobra and have no particular affinity for consuming its meat.
"In ancient Egypt according to the Greek historian Diodorus Siculus (1.35 & 1.87), native mongooses (Herpestes ichneumon) were venerated for their ability to handle venomous snakes and for their occasional diet of crocodile eggs."
I thought it was a funny, fitting name for a roller hockey team :)
