WOW..I read the article and couldn't believe it. Posted this post up and THEN watched the video. There was NOTHING wrong w/MJ's speech..this guy's an idiot. I can't BELIEVE Yahoo paid this guy $$ to write that article. It's obvious he has an axe to grind w/MJ. Like they say:

You don't get to the top of the heap by being humble..

i actually thought the speech was pretty sad. i thought the writer was dead on!! Horrible speech. MJ was the best! I dont argue with that, but with that speech, he was still trying to prove something...Robinson's speech - well, I cried. not much but I teared up. Stocktons was good but Jordan, come one. Thought he was better than that. The difference between Robinson's and Jordan's shows how much basketball meant to them. Basketball to Jordan was and is his life. Thats why he cant and wont let go...Basketball to Robinson was just a chapter in his life....

Oh yea, Robinson's speech was amazing...I also felt a warmth with his speech. Like you said karkid, basketball to Robinson is a closed chapter in his life. MJ on the other hand, basketball revolves around him, whether he wants to or not, it always will. I enjoyed his speech though, don't agree with it being garbage or a bad speech. He's just MJ, one of the most if not the most competitive players to have played, his competitive drive is still in his heart.

whale, I noticed that too. Kukoc is already very gray. He's aged a lot in the last three years since his retirement. Maybe he's going through a tough time since retirement, I don't know.

But yeah, I don't think Jordan meant disparagement in the speech. I'm pretty sure Leroy knew what Mike was going to say ahead of time and didn't take it personally, or else he wouldn't have been invited. Sure, Mike's speech wasn't as warm as D-Rob's or Stockton's, but those guys are in a classy class all by themselves. I've heard much worse and much more arrogant than what MJ said, and stated in a much less humorous tone.

Michael has a very good point.

He never plaid against Baylor or jerry west, george mikan, etc.,
so i think he gave an amazing speech that shows who he truely is...

I guess I was just, umm, let down by his speech. Before I watched Duncan at Wake and San Antonio, all I collected was MJ(course like most people). I liked the Spurs and DRob but come one, its Jordan!! He was basketball for me...after all he's accomplished, this was a culmination(spelling?) of all that he had achieved and well, seems like he dropped the ball. Too me at least. Honeslty, I was VERY dissapointed in the speech. Too me, he had a chance to be just as great as he is at that moment but chose to...I dont know but wow.....I guess it was about all he knew - basketball.

Well, this was only further showcase of what MJ's true nature is and always has been: a petty, petulant, selfish child.

Personally I'm sick of the way vast numbers of people try to deflect the criticisms and--let's put all the cards on the table--character assassinations MJ so rightfully deserves by just braying and screeching "He's the greatest!" over and over again. Well, that's debatable. Furthermore, it's an entirely different debate as to what he's like as a person. I think it's ironic that they had David Robinson and MJ inducted on the same night. D-Rob is one of the nicest, classiest, most decent guys around, and MJ is the exact opposite of him in every way imaginable. Usually we don't get to see what he's really like, as his public appearances are outstripped a thousand fold by his commercials and old game footage. But he definitely gave us all a peek beneath the public image that David Stern and Nike spent billions of dollars constructing for him.

Anyone who wants to shrug that off and attempt to shout down the real issue here by constantly bleating "he's the greatest!" like a sheep may go ahead. But just know that you're not making the real issue go away, you never can, and you're not earning any respect for MJ or for yourself.
