Pens: I live atleast 90mins South and since my state does not have any pro sports teams I latched onto anything Pittsburgh and Washington. Seeing more Pens helped with the decision and seeing the likes of Mario, Jagr, Recchi, Tocchet and others throughout the yrs helped with a PC focus.
Jordan Staal: gotta thank the girlfriend for this one... She lives in Toronto and one yr was the first time I spent one of many extended stays there. This one was for the 05-06 season. I wanted to follow teams outside the NHL to get a understanding of their systems and I found the Peterborough Pete's. There I followed a player by the name of Jordan Staal. Young with unlimited power but did not know how to properly focus it but had huge potential if he ever was going to hit the NHL. Well I didnt know but the Pens were looking at him, very nice for me as of course mentioned earlier about my faithful following of the Penguins. The draft came up and guess what... Pens pick Staal, o happy day. Though a ok start with ups and downs, he had promise to be really good being with the Pens or not.
Well collecting wise, I noticed I kept pulling all types of Staal cards without even trying to build a PC. I mulled around with collecting Staal but when more and more kept coming in, it felt like it was something to focus on.

The link shows all I have up to this point and with only a few yrs under his belt, I will have a long time ahead to keep collecting all sorts of stuff.

That's a great story about Staal! When you came to visit your girlfriend did you make it up to Peterborough to watch a Pete's game or watch them in another city? 2001-2006 were some of the best years to watch the Pete's as both Eric and Jordan Staal were amazing to watch along with some other great guys.

I did not get to make it for game but a good number of them were on the television. From just north of Toronto to Peterborough is something like 2hrs. I did make it finally this past yr though no games, I was able to talk to a few ppl about when the Staal's came through there and then with the other two going through Sudbury as well.

Bobby Hull, Hawerchuk, Selanne
I grew up in Winnipeg and lived there until 2002. Went to my first Jets game in 1977 and was at the last Jets game in Winnipeg on April 28, 1996.
Bobby Hull helped us win Avco Cups which I was present for at least one of as my dad had seasons tickets. Don't rememebr exactly which one(s). But I do remember watching Bobby skating up the ice helmetless and shooting the puck. He was awesome.
When the Jets entered the NHL, Hawerchuk was the toast of the town as soon as he was drafted and was instantly my favorite player. I met him early on too when my dad sold him a car and took me on the delivery. That day he gave me the items below. I was probably 12 (1984). Hawerchuk was the Winnipeg Jets and even "hockey" to me in my early teens.
When Selanne came into the league and lit it up, Winnipeg seemed liek a different place. He had a huge impact on the City. We had seasons tickets his rookie year and I was at at least 35 of the games including the ones in which he scored his 50th goal, his 54th goal and his 119th point. I was actually in the front row and jumped up on the glass when he threw his glove in the air and porceeded to "shoot" it down. Until he was traded from Winnipeg, I didn't truly understand how the Oiler fans felt when Gretzky was traded.
Anyway, I grew up with these guys being the driving force of a consummate underdog. They gave us hope and they each gave us something to cheer for during their tenures in Winnipeg. And I just can't seem to let them go

Hejduk, Koivu, Doan, & Lee
Milan Hejduk-his RC year was when i got into collecting seriously, The Avalanche were my favorite team ever since they went to Colorado so naturally i watched them a lot on tv. I really liked Hejduk and thought he had a ton of potential and so my pc began.
Mikko Koivu-Got back into collecting in 05-06 after the high school days and wanted to have a PC of a RC from that year and being from MN i started watching Koivu and the wild and got his Cup Gold RC graded 9 by BGS on Ebay and that has been the centerpiece of my koivu collection since
Shane Doan-We share the same first name and hes my girlfriends favorite player
Brian Lee-one of my best friends since we were like 5 years old, played hockey, soccer, etc together all through out school graduated in the same class, i have pics of us in our hockey gear together as kids so its just cool to see him have actual cards as we collected and traded together as kids.

Ken Dryden - I grew up in Montreal in the 70's and thought he was soooooo cool standing there resting on his stick. The Stanley Cups and parades didn't hurt either hahaaaaaa.
Trevor Linden - I've lived in Vancouver the last 30+ years, he was the Heart & Soul of the Canucks, the hardest working player on the ice EVERY night, the guy who played game 7 with broken ribs.
I've been fortunate enough to meet both of them, Mr Dryden was very polite to my 15 year old self, and Trev was SO nice to my son. Good god, I'm actually welling up typing this..........

I cannot believe that I have not posted in such a thread before!
But...
Arturs Irbe: In my opinion, the greatest goaltender of all-time. Shrink down all of the greats down to his 5'8" frame, and start all of the greats on an expansion nightmare like San Jose and all of a sudden, it will be clear that Irbe is the tops. His half-decayed goalie equipment was just awesome and his game-time rituals were equally unusual but cool. A true personality of the game! I also loved how he outduelled the greats such as Brodeur, Theodore, and CuJo in 2002 on route to the Cup finals. There are many other reasons, but they are too numerous to list.
Levente Szuper: The first Hungarian player to ever dress in an NHL game, I chose to collect him because I love goaltending and because I am Hungarian by blood (born Canadian citizen though). It's a fun and highly affordable side-project of mine.
