vlad - You're getting pretty heated about your interpretation of what someone said, not knowing if it's actually what he meant, yet you haven't even mentioned any problem w/Sen Byrd who was a member of the KKK, which is factual and not just your view of something. As Mike said, I think that alone shows how you're looking at this.

It is nice that people like you feel so strongly when it is a Republican, but say nothing when it is Democrat. Thanks for proving my double standard/hypocrisy theory. :)
Mike- You are calling me a typical democrat. To bad im a moderate who just doesnt like when ultra conservatives (you) and ultra liberals spin the facts. i was reading your other post and saw how you just left out the unemployment rates from 2008 and 2009, but saying how many great jobs were made in the previous years. Typical republican using the facts that help him, but ignore those that hurt him. Republicans feel that liberals are elitists and there is such a great double standard. I don't see a double standard. You are so against democrats and i feel as if you are not for republicans. I have never seen you write a post saying how great the republican party is, just 5000000000000 posts on how bad the democrats are. Well, what is the republican alternative? Again, not trying to fight over petty issues, but if you are calling me a typical democrat and YOU, then i would just like to know your side.
My .02, I don't agree with what Lott or Reid said. Lott resigned and Reid will take heat for what he said. There is no double standard and if you are telling me to stick to facts and not my opinion, i would like you to show me facts where there is a double standard.

Ok, you make it easy enough...look at the sentence right before your request. One is forced to resign, the other is not. Pretty basic.

He wasnt forced to resign. He got heat and he pretty much took the simple way out. Reid could resign too if he wanted.
Now, this will make you guys happy, but i dont know if you are aware what reid said in 2002. His quote (about Lott in 02), "He had no alternative," said Reid at the time claiming, "If you tell ethnic jokes in the backroom, it's that much easier to say ethnic things publicly. I've always practiced how I play." Thats a hypocrit and he should be forced to resign as well, but i dont think you can catalogue one democrat or one republican as a "typical dem or republican"

Negro was the term used pre PC days. Reid is of that generation.
What he said is stupid and if people think it was stupid enough he will pay by not being re-elected.
Enough people describe themselves as Negro to have it on the Census form.
My biggest complaint is that Reid apologied to one of the biggest race baiting ™™™™™s in the world Al Sharpton. Why again was Sharpton apologized to?

Well this story is getting some attention on the news now. It seems that each person is choosing their stance on the issue by their party. If reid helps them they back him. If not, they what him to step down too. Kind of makes me wonder what people really think. Probably lots of people that don;t like what he said but toeing the party line as usual simply because they would then be risking something.
I did hear on the Today show political correspondent say that when Lott was forced out that republicans were all for him stepping down as well. No clue if that is true or not but found it interesting.
I'm not sure to whom he said this and in what context, but to me I would think any politician would be smarter than to say anything like this. What did he expect people to say?

I think that's definitely the case, but the issue comes when Democrats are up in arms when it's a Republican, but let it slide when it's a Democrat. As you mentioned below, Republicans were for Lott stepping down after his comments and they're for Reid stepping down for his...consistent. Democrats aren't being consistent. Obviously it's all a political game, but at least the Republicans are playing by the same rules.
I think Republicans have to at least act a little more appalled by this type of thing because they don't have the historical support of the black community...ie they are trying to win some votes. Democrats already have that support, so they don't have to "prove" their outrage, while Republicans can't afford to be perceived as the least bit allowing of it.

The difference is that Republicans choose to step down and Democrats choose to entrench themselves because they can't stand to lose power.
Example 1 - Congressman Jefferson
Example 2 - Congressman Rangle
I noticed Rangle behind Pelosi the other day and is still in power. The main difference is that Republicans usually choose to step down while Democrats wait until they get voted out of power.

vladroks- since lott supporting thurman had to be about race and nothing else, then using that logic, everyone who has ever voted for byrd but also support racism. man, we have an entire state of racists. And no, you aren't making up his quote but you are making up "what he meant by it." You, like the democrats at the time, portrayed to anyone who would listen that there was no other explanation for his comment then that he was referring to segregation. That is reading very far into the quote.
