Just had my first eBay case opened (against me) ever!

Buyer bought a card, paid on January 17th. I mailed it out on the 20th, with tracking. Added tracking number to the item.

Today a case was opened, claimed they never got the card... this was the message:

Apparently the tracking no. info is incorrect as my shipping address is Jamaica, NY, and not MISSISSAUGA, ON. Have stated the track no is incorrect but no reply from seller! As for today, the item is not arrived!

So, the first part claims the tracking number is incorrect. This was true. I mailed two things out that day (the other was an Amazon return). I did keep my receipt, and have the correct tracking number (which I've now provided).

The second part is somewhat disingenuous. He did state the tracking number is incorrect (in the sentence right before it) but this was the first I'd heard of it. There never any other message from him.

When I check the tracking via Canada Post, it shows as having been delivered on 01/29.

Maybe he got it, maybe he didn't - but tracking shows that he did. Is that tracking number (showing delivery) going to be enough for me to win the case?

This is an eBay member I have sold to before, without problems (I thought I recognized the name, I can confirm that) so I really don't want to suspect something shady.... of course I also have to mention this part:

I sent a message to another eBay member (seller) a couple days before that, regarding an item I bought in early December which had not yet arrived. I get no answer (and eventually open a case, which they keep ignoring too).

The two members live less than 10 miles apart. Coincidence?

I think this will depend on the person reviewing the case. I was on the other end of this (buyer) and the tracking information showed that it was successfully delivered to the community mailbox. Unfortunately, I (still) have home delivery and do not have a community mailbox. It didn't matter, I lost the case because they said the tracking information said it was delivered.

And the case has been closed.... Buyer confirmed that he got the card.

So what, I entered the wrong tracking number - so he thought he'd pull one over on me and get the card for nothing? Because I don't believe for a second that it showed up yesterday.

Can't you tell by the tracking when it actually showed up?

Yes. Tracking shows that it arrive on Jan 29th.

I entered the wrong number, and he claims (8 days after it arrived) that he's never got it, tracking is wrong. I fix the tracking, and suddenly it showed up.

Can't you tell by the tracking when it actually showed up?

You going to take any action like block him from future auctions or just let it slide.

    Thinking about it.

I like to think well of people, and usually give the benefit of doubt. This situation just smacks of something being wrong though.

I think I mentioned earlier - I went back through my eBay history, and I can confirm that I have dealt with this buyer before... a package that was NOT tracked... and had no problem.

Of course this was a higher valued card (if I was out $20, I'd be mad... but not terribly upset. This was about 10x that) than the last one too.

I'm just not sure how I'm supposed to believe that a case gets opened due to the card not arriving / wrong tracking entered..... I fix the tracking and show it should have been delivered over a week earlier..... and then the case is closed. Just like that? I just don't believe that it showed up immediately after I fixed the tracking.

Well best of luck with however you proceed.

I know this can sound silly, as it's something small like blocking a bidder on eBay - but I do like to think that MOST of the time, I will give people the benefit of the doubt, and I do try to treat people how I would want to be treated....

This morning, my decision was made that much easier. Blocked. I'll stick the eBay user names in here for anyone that cares:

nyccardvault was the seller who I opened a case against. I waited as a long as I could to open that case, and only did so after they ignored messages from me. While the case was open (weeks, I was still really patient) I got one very quick message (asking me to wait a bit longer, which I agreed to) and then had my messages ignored afterwards. (if you're wondering, eBay did rule in my favor on the case - I got a full refund).

As I mentioned earlier in the thread. The day after opened the case, I sold a high value ($200 CND) to eastern_gate. I have sold to this member before. I sent with tracking, but as mentioned, I entered the wrong tracking number. A case was opened against me (claimed they never received it). I then provided the correct tracking number, and the case was immediately closed. Tracking showed it was delivered on January 29th, case was opened on February 7th (and close that day too). Hard for me to believe that it actually showed up that day, and my real concern was that someone was tacking advantage of the fact that I made a mistake with the tracking number.

When it occurred to me to look at the location of both members (NYC zip codes are 11434 for eastern_gate, and 11375 for nyccardvault) and I realized they are only about 6 miles apart, that's when I became concerned that the case was an attempt at retaliation.

This morning, I received an offer on the single item I've got listed on eBay right now. It's something that eBay actually has flagged as "you should consider adjust the price or the listing, there have been no offers in 16 months" (or something like that). This one is even pricier. I look at the offer, and look at who made it. It's a user called supernovasunset, with the same zip code as nyccardvault.

I declined the offer, and blocked all three from sending offers (and, unfortunately, I'm going to have to do the same with any bids or offers from Queens in the near future).

Again, full story: eastern_gate has bought cards from me before... untracked... and I'd never had a problem. I am not suggesting anyone else block these three accounts, just stating that I did. Am I being paranoid? Maybe, but I really don't believe in coincidences much.

    Sean,
i find the locations to be a little funny as well due to their proximity. What you did seem logical to me. Nothing wrong with being proactive to keep something like this from happening again by blocking them.
