one can only assume that you've been to jail, at least once for an extended stay, to have such first hand knowledge

otherwise, what in the world are you talking about?

I can't think of a worse punishment than to be crammed into a room with 40 dudes, sharing 3 toilets & 2 showers...the death penalty sounds better than that

All I have to say is Cable TV and working out all day. You share a cell with another guy. Now im sure its is worse then being in you rhome havign a beer watchign the game, but it is in no way a deterrent

Bingo. Id be down with the cost of the prisons, just build four big concrete walls, and dump them in. Drop soem food in eveyr now and then and let them fight for it. Jail needs to be ****, not a cake walk.

And no most can not be reformed. Theres a reason that of the last 6 cop killers in Philly, all 6 were convicted criminals. I dont know it off of the top of my head, but I know the rate of people released comitting crimes again is high, very high.

while the recidivism rate is high (51% of all released inmates are rearrested within 3 years), there are 49% that don't...and half is good enough to keep me from subscribing to your theory that prisoners cant be reformed

I've been to Philly many times and it's a great city like many other American cities...It also has it's share of problems, like every other American city. The murder rate is attrocious, and there's no excusing that...it's unbelievable that there are actually 16,000+ murders per year in the US

did you realize 28% of America's prison population hasn't even been convicted of the crime they sit in jail for? It's also estimated that 1 in 15 people will spend time in jail in their lifetime...so you must realize that everybody that goes to jail is not doing 25-life for killing a cop

Society didnt make you shove a gun in someones face and rob them, you did it and you shouldnt be on the streets.

and once you pay your debt to society, then you should be free to resume your life....i am not against stiff sentences or even the death penalty for harsh crimes...i am not against extended periods of supervised release for high risk individuals...but you can't pretend that everybody who's been to jail is going to commit a crime in the future because it's simply not true

I can agree to some of your points, in that the colliseum fights should be reserved for the violent offenders. Theyre shoudl be a two strikes and your out law. You get convicted of a violaent crime, you go to jail. You get out and get convicted of another violent crime. Your done, permanently.

and the 28% sitting in jail are awaiting trial...i'm only guessing, but i would say 27% can't afford to post bail, and the other 1% had bail denied due to the nature of their alleged crimes

As for those 28%, i know first hand if they get a high bail its because its warranted, and there is the probable cause to back it up. And upon conviction, they get credit for time served, so technically that time gets credited towards their conviction.

What about the theory that jail/prison is a school for crime, you go in for something and learn from other criminals what you did wrong and how to do it better. What if the recidivism rate is what it is because some convicts get better at crime while in the joint and don't get caught when they get out? I'm not necessarily saying I agree with that, but just because someone isn't arrested again in 3 years doesn't necessarily mean they're not still commiting crimes.

red... are you kidding me? go into a jail... nice furniture, cigerette machines, comfy beds to sleep on... cable tv... there are a lot of inmates that live nicer in jail than they do outside jail. Some of the lower security facilities even have basketball leagues, card games going on all the time.. usually playing for cigs or other "valuables".. places to work out. Some have food in vending machines, pop, and some get special meals on special days such as pizza from a local joint on fridays, turkey on thanksgiving, and ham on easter. They forget they are at jail... its more like a hotel. Most community jails are a joke.

good point, and I agree with you...just because you didn't get arrested after you got out doesn't mean you weren't committing crimes. buy my whole point was that just because you go to jail doesn't mean you are a criminal for life with no potential for rehab.

so what you are saying is that you've been there before, and you think it's a joke. a place to relax, and get away from the stress of regular life?

i have never been in jail but in my work i visit about once a quarter or so to 2 local facilities.... the jailers at both would tell you the same things i have.

look, no offense....but until you've been to jail as a prisoner, even if it was only for one night, you really have no business commenting on whether or not it's a cakewalk
