Personally I think he gets way too much credit during the regular season, and far too much criticism in the postseason. He is an excellent playmaker. The problem is that he has never been great at putting the puck in the net. Without another superstar on the team to take the pressure off of him, he is very easy to defend, specifically in a head to head 7 game series. Not to mention Nabakov giving the team next to no help in net, its a very poorly build playoff team. Put Thornton with another legit star and he'll put up points in the playoffs. Keep him around Cheechoo and Marleau and he'll continue to be a non factor.
Im going to slightly agre with you there, he doesnt really have a second superstar to help him out yet, Setoguchi in the future will develop to probably become a thirty goal scorer if he was on a normal team but with thornton he might actually hit 40. Most people dont realize that he is one of the best playmakers in the game and that he makes others look better. Take Marleau for example, he isnt normally a 30 goal scorer but this year he had 38 goals because one of his linemates was Joe Thornton. Also Thornton doesnt have any problems putting the puck in the net, he hasnt missed the 20 goal mark since like 1999. 20 goals is a good amount for a playmaker. The only problem the coaches have with him is the fact that he doesnt shoot, he is always looking to make the pass. Also I will agree with you that nabby really doesnt help the sharks look better, especially ths playoffs

For the Sabres -
I'd say Ryan Miller is most important to our team, just look what happened when we were without him for that stretch of games, basically cost us the playoffs (thank you Scott Gomez)
Aside from our goalie I'd say Vanek or Derek Roy. Derek Roy is very underrated as someone else previously mentioned. Vanek has finally began to play the way he should, so I put him up there on our team

Henrik Lundqvist is by fare the best Ranger. The rangers would have never made the playoffs if it wasn't for him.

On the Leafs before Sundin left is was easily him for the 13 years he was a Leaf he was by far there best player which is why they never won anything because he had no other stars to play with. Actually surprising they made the Eastern Conference Finals twice with the team they had. No surprise they couldn't win the Stanley Cup with him alone.
Now for the Leafs it may be Kaberle as their best player. Schenn is their best young player. Best forward is almost impossible to choose between Stajan, Blake, or Ponikarovsky which is sad. Kulemin and Tlusty are their best skilled prospect forwards.

Yeah Roy is pretty solid as well. The little guy finds a way to put up points. And we have him locked up for several years at 4 mil.

After this past season I'd say Stafford and Miller were probably the best players we had in Buffalo, the rest of them were too streaky, too apathetic, or spent too much time being injured.

My opinion is a toss up between Roberto Luongo and the Sedin twins....can't really come to an agreement with myself (and the voices)...lol...If we are talking playoffs then def the Twins as they showed up and played hard every night...
