Hobby-wise, yes. Respect-wise around the NHL? Maybe a little. Nobody doubts that they're elite players, as is evident by the amount of awards they haul in, but it's that whole "well of course they're good, they're with the Red Wings" mentality about them that almost handicaps their level of adulation.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

He got over 1600 points and nobody even noticed him, climbing up the all time points list.
HOF in the 1ST vote.

I think overall Weber and John-Michael Liles would be near the top of my list. Don't know what to think of Parise because I think he does get the respect he deserves from hockey lovers, just maybe not card collectors as much as he should.

Doughty is probably going to end up being a more valuable player than Parise when all is said and done, he's amazing. Stamkos has the potential but at this point its 50/50. You're right on your assessment of Gagner though, but being Canadian + playing on a Canadian team always increases ones hobby respect.
Its hard to identify the most underrated player because technically when everyone begins to identify a player as so they stop becoming one, its kind of a catch 22.
Frankly, I think defensemen in general are underated as a whole. Someone like Zubov during his prime, or Weber today, these guys are/were superstars but don't get the acclaim because the spotlight is taken away by forwards for obvious reasons.

you are right about the D-man thing although I don't think it's because of the forwards. It's more about we as hobbiest and fans are use to hearing the same D-men names all the time, Lidstrom, Chara, Pronger, Neidemayer, Phenauf just to name a few. Don't get me wrong, these guys are all good D-men in their own right.
That being said I think Duncan Keith is underrated. A good solid D-man with plenty of speed. The last 2 years he has been in the top 5 D-men in +/-.

How can Burnaby Joe be considered underrated?? If we are talking Hobby love, I might be able to see that but looking at the awards, AS games and SC's I really can't call Joe underrated!
IMO - All Time most underrated player in history is Mike Gartner....700+ goals for his carreer and nobody knows who is his anymore.
