Some people build sets, some people just disregard them. I personally don't like base cards anymore. Maybe it's because I collected back in the 1990s where certified autos and certified GUs were unheard of. So, in a way, I have kind of "outgrown" base cards and found a nice niche in the hobby that I enjoy collecting. The one thing I do like/miss about base cards that I wish other cards have are the season stats and the quick-facts. You'd think that UD, ITG, & Panini would have the creativity to add them on non-base cards.

I love base cards and collect them not just of Lundqvist but of the entire Rangers team (and the Knicks !). Frankly base cards are the cards I look at the most. I particularly like the backs for the information on them.

I have said this many times, As a set collector it really bugs me to see all these collectors busting box after box and when you ask about the base they'll say something like "I don't trade base not worth the cost of shipping" or "only looking for GUed,autos, rookies, Sid or Ovy".

My whole collection is mostly base cards, I have no problem with having bases, and if it looks good, I'll try to build the set.

I like base cards, but to a point. Upper Deck Series 1/2 are sets I build every year. But after I have a single set, what else do I need them for? You may be able to move a few out in trades to team collectors, or player collectors. After a couple of boxes of something like UDS1, sometimes you are missing a couple of cards - so sending someone the 5 they're missing works too.
But if someone opens a case of this stuff, what are they going to do with the rest? Like people have already suggested, sending them a kids charity is a great way to get rid of them. Otherwise, they're just taking up space.

I keep all base cards I have, and I really like them. I do not go for building a set, but I grew up with the 90s stuff with all the inserts and parallels, and bases and I still like them. I don't toss them when I open a box, I treat them as equally as real "hits". Once a year, I even re-organize all of my common base/insert/rookie binders alphabetically. It takes a few weeks, but it is totally worth it.
Also, you can make a killing selling base duplicates in garage sales, especially if you have over 10 000 base duplicates. It's not unrealistic to think that you could make $500 over a weekend...enough for more boxes.

I don't care basecards simply because I have to many of them! lol
But like a few others have said...I seriously dont mind them if I didn't have that many. A lot of them look very nice, even the ones that are worth a penny. I actually treasure a few old Canuck ones with Trevor Linden, Pavel Bure, and Kirk Mclean on the front. If there weren't many base around, i think dont think people would mind them as much.

Base cards are the bread and butter of the Vintage Collector.
If there weren't Sweet Caporal Cigarettes, OPC and Topps Bubble Gum there wouldn't be cards, and without those base cards to get kids excited, there wouldn't be 1/1's.
Having a 1/1 was really something from 1997-2001, as they were a 1:2,500 Pack Pull, just like the 96-97 UD Game Jerseys.
1/1's now, are a complete joke. Spend enough money, and you get one in almost every box.

This is exactly this case. I like completely some base sets like SPx, Trilogy, Certified (this year), Artifacts, and SPA but I get doubles after opening 2 boxes of SPA. I have triple and quadruples of some Certified base yet am still missing 30+ after opening 6 1/2 boxes! What am I going to do with all the extras? I likely have over 10,000 base cards (as a rough estimate) just taking up space.
I really should pack them up and send them to the Childrens hospital or Canucks Place or the local minor hockey association as hockey playing kids would likely appreciated them.

However in 96-97 Upper Deck must have produced in a massive amount of boxes since enough Sundin 96/97 UD Game Jerseys pop up on ebay. The BV is $80 but they sell for $15-30 which is why I still am missing that card from my Sundin collection.
