It will give them a reason to come out with parallels for next season
    Shield 1/1 & shield/auto 1/1

You know whats really sick about that Ovechkin? I can tell by looking at it that is is from a 2005-06 rookie year gamer.

So hate all you want, that is still an incredible card!

no doubt that is an incredible card but is it just me or is it not on the checklist?

Not necessarily. 2006-07 Caps jerseys were the old style as well so it could have very well came from his 2nd year.

Definitely an incredible card, I just wish there was a little more effort into one of the best possible pulls in the product. Center the swatch window and I'd have nothing to complain about. We rag on Upper Deck and ITG all the time for the same things so there is nothing wrong with a little constructive criticism for Panini.

I thought it looked like it had the extra stitching in it that they applied when they stitched the 05-06 style shields over the old ones from the 04-05 gamers that were made up pre-lockout.

But yeah, you're right Kyle, it could be 06-07.

I agree wholeheartedly the card would be better served autoed, even with a sticker. I would have to imagine then, as others said, there IS an auto version of this.

But in fairness to Panini, I imagine the machines are set up to construct and die cut these cards all the same way, regardless of parallel level, so changing the location of the window would be an immense task for one card or even one tier of cards.

This isn't like ITG where they hand cut and construct their windows for a smaller scale product.

Also, look at UD's Dual Cup Shields, autoed and unautoed. Same concept, some have the open area with no auto and then some have it, they don't reconfigure the shield placement on those cards either?

A guy on HI pulled it:

It's sad to see these arent even autographed. UD started to overproduce Shields in last years Cup and now that Panini produces them as well, its a matter of time before most sell for under $200.

    What do you guys think?

If anybody can sell this Ovechkin card to me for $200, I will throw the money right away!!!!!!!! Of course the noname guys will sell for $50, even if you put a pure diamond on the card. Who will shoot big money for Brad Winchester?

I think it is a job well done by Panini. At least I have now few quality cards to chase outside UD Ultimate and The Cup. I think demand will stay very strong, so prices will stay pretty high for popular names.

I looked at the card again and that has to be one of the worst designs I've ever seen. Panini really needs revisit how they do patches/materials because that's one area they are currently way behind UD.

My idea would be to have a card with a shield cut and have inlay on the outside. Cut the card to the shield specifications and then add gold/silver/emerald/ruby/sapphire/plantinum/diamond siding to make the card a rectangle.

Frankly that Ovechkin card is one of the least inspired 1 of 1s I've ever seen.

P.S. It looks more like a driver's license more than a trading card ... which gives me another idea which is to make a passport looking card with stamp of an event like World Championship. Get to it Panini/UD

How is that design any worse than UD Dual Shields from last year's Cup? Same thing, big cut out window for the shield, picture of the player?

At least Panini has foil/chrome accents on the Limited cards and this isn't even their highest end product like the Cup where it was all matte finish on the shield cards.

Oh, one last noteworthy point for the naysayers:

When is the last time UD put out game used shield cards before May?

We always had to wait for Ultimate in May. (maybe August these days)

    Now Panini delivers them pre-Christmas?

Again, Panini trying to get WAY ahead of the curve (Has everyone forgotten about their auto rookies in Certified in October?) and do good things and people hate.

    Comical.

    Prime B,

I like a lot of what Panini does. I'm not a big fan of some of the Cup stuff either. For high end stuff like this I expect more out of the card itself. Panini is adapting to the learning curve but they shouldn't be immune from criticism just because they're new.

I'd jsut like to see design improvement. For the records I think Crown Royale will be Panini's "crowning" achievement (no pun intended) as those cards have the msot thought in terms of design put into them. For limited I just feel that the cards lack that umph for a one pack per box product whereas the designs for Crown Royale look like they are more reminiscient of a top end product.
