My main player collection is of Ben Bishop. He was spent the majority of the season in the AHL, playing pretty well and putting up decent stats. In his brief NHL stint, he played also played well and showed signs of being the Blues backup next season (If Allen doesn't play extraordinary in camp). During his call up, I noticed a recent upward trend in his prices. This trend even continued somewhat after he was assigned to Peoria again. As a result, a plate 1/1 and a the Cup Gold /30 went for more than I expected, so I didn't bid. I'm a fan of Bishop for reasons other than how well he happens to be playing, so his production only affects my collecting during changes in what cards I need sell for.

It matters a lot to me.
In 07-08 I collected Toews, Kane, Price, Backstrom and Gagner when they were playing really well in their rookie seasons. When some of them dropped off, I stopped collecting them.
The year after, I was going for Stamkos stuff initially, but he didn't play very well so I moved on to Steve Mason after he got really hot. I also started picking up Bobby Ryan stuff.
In 09-10, Steve Mason started playing bad so I stopped collecting him, and wanted to collect Tavares, Duchene, Myers and JVR.
This year, I started collected Hall, Seguin, Eberle, Paajarvi, Skinner, Bobrovsky and Subban. I also decided to collect Reimer, Grabner and Couture since they were playing very well. I stopped collecting the guys in the previous years since they're not worth as much anymore.
So basically, in the last 4 years, my PC players have been Price, Toews, Kane, Backstrom, Gagner, Stamkos, Mason, Ryan, Tavares, Duchene, Myers, JVR, Hall, Seguin, Eberle, Paajarvi, Skinner, Bobrovsky, Subban, Reimer, Grabner and Couture. I also collect Crosby and Ovechkin. Next year I will collect Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Adam Larsson, Gabriel Landeskog, and Sean Couturier If you have any of those guys, please let me know[/sarcasm]
(Please don't pm me
, I only collect 3 of those guys)
On a more serious level, it doesn't matter me too much for my PC players. I collect more based on players that I like and who are on my favorite teams. I would like to see my players succeed, but just because they aren't playing well is no reason for me to drop them.Last edited by oilfan10; 04-05-2011 at 05:59 PM.

I thought you said you stopped collecting those players because they 'tailed' off? Lol.

I edited my post for clarification. The only guys I have ever collected, and still collect, on that list were Eberle, Gagner, and Price. I was just pointing out some collecting habits people have.

Haha. I just find it annoying when people collect a certain guy because he's having a good 10 or 15 games so to speak and drop them for another hot-shot.
That's why I majorly collect just one guy ;)

My major PC player, Corey Perry is having his career year so far. In talks for the Hart (don't think he'll get it, but shot at Top 5) which is making me very happy...as a fan.
As a collector, I'm torn because I love seeing him do well (Richard Trophy on the way!) but it sure is tough to see all of my money being taken up because people are grabbing his cards on eBay left, right and centre. I'm not slowing down on collecting (in fact, I'm devoting more money than ever to his PC instead of buying boxes), but even at the beginning of the season his cards were cheap (10-11 Blank Back went for 99 cents), now I'd be lucky to get one for under 10 bucks (good thing I already have one).

I like to see my guys produce, but I haven't added/deleted anyone based on performance. I will continue to collect Toews, Pavelec and Bernier for the forseeable future even if they don't have great seasons. To that end, I'd say Toews has had a very good season, Pavelec an almost-breakout year, and Bernier had a typical backup/developing goalie season.
The one guy whose performance may affect my collecting of him is Jhonas Enroth. I'm not a Sabres fan, but I liked him before he reached the NHL and he's been a fun player to chase. He's been getting some action and putting up good numbers recently, though, and that's reflected in the prices of his cards. I'm on the fence when it comes to deciding whether to collect him going forward, or to move this part of my collection.

I only collect one player. Unfortunately I haven't noticed alot of fluctuation in his cards. Early on when rookie year products were coming out he was pricy based on potential. Then he hit 46 goals/82 pts a couple years ago and that kept the prices as high as the rookie hype sales were getting. He's followed it up with two decent production seasons seasons and prices haven't changed much. Probably also influenced by the long term contract that will keep him a Flyer for some time, but the production has been consistent so the pricing has also been.

Good responses. Im more speaking of how your players play makes you feel about your collection than stopping/starting because of their play. I have stuck by all my PC guys and plan to. I just find that when my guys are playing well, it makes me happier with my PC's. I mean I collect them for the way they play so if they dont play to the level I think they should, Im not gonna be as happy with them as PC guys. If my guys "slump", im okay with it and not going to dump them. If they begin to get lazy and hurt the team then they will fail to remain the player I liked and began collecting and that may make me start to reconsider how much I pursue them if that makes sense.
I also would like to know what kinda numbers you are happy to see your guy put up as this is different for every type of guy. Dont just say production doesnt change your feelings about PC at all cause theres no way thats how everybody feels....lol

Here's my two cents. I collect Zack Kassian and Tim Kennedy primarily and to me, I originally started both collections because I feel that they have bright NHL futures but aren't considered superstars so in the regard I suppose production matters in some sense. But digging deeper, for Kassian especially, his day-to-day play makes me feel AWESOME about my Kassian collection. Lately he's been tearing it up and it makes me more and more proud to have as many cards of him as I do. As you said above Rich, when he slumps, of course I'm disappointed but no way Jose would I drop him. I love Kassian's style of play and the intensity with which he plays are things I value as a hockey fan and when he's producing, I just feel such a sense of accomplishment, almost as if to say "that's my PC guy!" haha. On the flip side, when one of my PC guys, like Tim Kennedy sort of is right now, is not playing well or not playing at an NHL level (TK is down in the AHL now) I feel bad for him. It's almost as if I feel some of the highs and lows of my guys careers vicariously through my collections lol. Anyways, that is how I would say production affects my collecting. I stay true to my guys yes, but more because of the joys I get when I see my players doing well. It's a cool feeling :)
