Now, check those printing plates, real or fake??

Those plates are real. When Pacific closed there doors they had a huge fire sale on past items and leftovers. That's where he got those plates from. Fleer did the same thing.

Luckily I'm not looking to trade it, but I think I've now proven that the hobby is overrun with paranoia.

I've had more than one person tell me my Chin-Lung Hu patch from 06 Bowman Draft is fake even though I pulled it from a retail pack. One guy even said maybe they faked the patch and then resealed the pack??? A - Why, in the name of God would anyone want to do that??? and B - if you actually believe things like that, it would probably be easier for you to just leave the hobby or at least ignore patch cards which is easy enough.

Not the greatest scan - but if anyone wants to take a look.

By looking at the card I wold say its real. The reason I would say that is, if somebody would of put a fake patch in it they would of centered the pirate in the middle of the swatch.

I believe you got it that way. I have pulled a patch from bowman draft before and even got a patch from football from bowman. Nice card btw.

It has been done before. A card owner in Hong Kong sold for other customers in ebay. Couple patches are totally fake. People emailed back to the owner saying his cards are all fake. The owner had to go to forum and clear everything he sold, and took off all the auctions in ebay.

I can easily sell a fake patch in card show, but the owner with 1,000,000 feedback may not know my card is fake. He then goes into ebay to sell. Most card owners don't even remember what they have in their inventory unless it is expensive. When they sell fake patch, sometimes, they just don't know about it.

Look, people have asked me to sell stuff that looks spotty in my showcase at shows or at my buddy's shop. And like that old saying goes:

"If you walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck. It's a DAMN DUCK!"

It's nobody's fault but the person who takes it on and he's just as guilty as the frauding party.

Because if you did it once or twice, that's understandable that you didn't know but to have a boatload of stuff that just seems too good to be true, you are a guilty party.

Just by the sheer numbers and the brand. Yes.

Who in the world would fake Printing Plates from Pacific?

The risk vs. reward factor is a key here. I've seen fake gold embossed stamps on cards that said "1/1" and it was usually done to about 20 Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaq type cards and then 100 done to smaller players but from various manufacturers but mostly good brands and higher end stuff.

This was done to them during the 1/1 craze. I even saw a 1/1 Upperdeck Michael Jordan card that was bogus and never had a serial #'d cards in it's print run, sell for close to $600 dollars.

eBay and Fraudsters ruined card collecting. Point blank.

It's bad that there are way too many people in the hobby that would do this to make a buck. That's why I just stay on my own packs and if I pull a patch then I know it's real and don't have to worry about people saying otherwise.

But the biggest key is to do research on the card. If it's too good to be true, then look up others like it. If there aren't any that look like what you see, then there's a good chance that either A) It's fake or B) it should be so low numbered that there aren't that many out there of it to begin with.

Just remember that dishonesty only comes back to haunt you when it comes to this stuff. If you deal with bogus cards... sooner or later you're gonna get hit with a bogus card.

You should check the history of selling. They sell for good $10 or $20. It is a profit that a lot of people don't bother to ask refund. It doesn't need to be big money. People will still do it.

Just showing the point that seller with 10k feedback can still sell fake stuff. It is not the feedback that leads you 100% trust the seller. It is your research to make sure you get something real.

Also, I don't think that Hong Kong seller has time to go through 1,000 cards to verify each patch. The time to scan and to put on ebay are already time consuming.

One thing that no one has mentioned is that earlier (pre-2005) they didn't generally specify if it was a patch. Up to about 2003 all the game-used cards ever said was "Game-Worn Jersey" which was the case with the Curt Schilling patch posted earlier. So if you're looking at a patch from 2003 or earlier just because it doesn't say patch doesn't mean it's fake - none of them did then...only at about 2004 (and definitely in 2005) onward did the change come where they started distinguishing.
