How is sniping an auction cheating? Whoever has the highest bid wins the auction. Isn't that the basis of E-bay?

If you bid the most you're willing to pay on eBay (which is what you should be doing) than there shouldn't be a problem. Granted, it sucks to get sniped, but oh, well. I think everyone's done it at one point or another, and it will continue because it is fair according to eBay rules.
What I don't like, though, are auto snipers. If you're too lazy or preoccupied to manually snipe, then that is pretty sad. Again, bid what you're willing to pay and that's it. End of story.

I agree with the philosophy. I dont think its fair there are auto snipers in place either. I wouldnt call someone beating you on an auction sniping though. Heres an example of an auto snipe I recently encountered:
5 minuntes left on a J Rich patch /50
Im winning it for 2 bucks, and thought I would be a max of 5. So, I did that, and it said Id been outbid. That, I dont see is fair.

I placed a max of 5, when I was winning it at 2. Its the whole thought, be there for the auction to bid. Why should they have an advantage to win over anyone else? Its like having the auction timer, running it down so Only you can see. Its an unfair advantage to win.

So your maximum was $5. What if he/she sniped and his maximum was $10. Does that mean it was unfair that he/she was willing to pay more? You have to know that there are other people watching and wanting these cards so you have to take them into account and your willingness to spend money on the card.
Some people can't be there for the end of the auction. That is exactly why they invented the 'maximum bid' and 'auto snipe'. To help people win when they can't watch the auction to the end.
Oh, and sometimes a person decides at the last minute he wants the card because its at a good price.
