Never understood the 'on-card auto' craze.

Yes, it is cool to have an autographed card of your favourite player, but ink fades over time. A sticker auto will not.

Besides, who is to say that player ACTUALLY signed it? Sure, it says on the back of the card that it was signed by player X in the presence of a card company official, or it was sent to the company by the player and the authenticity is verified by the certificate on the card.

However, given the fiasco a while back about whether jerseys used in cards being from photo shoots or were actually worn in a game, I question everything now.

I collect SP Authentic rookies because they tend to be relatively affordable and are fun to collect. The fact that many are autographed is a bonus. But I don't try to acquire a card simply because it is an 'on-card auto'. Never really was a star-watcher/celebrity freak.

I bet 99.9% of autos released from UD, Topps, & Panini are all authentic. People like on card autos because of how clean they look on the card. They rarely fade if taken care of. I am not a star watcher but think autos add collectibility to cards.

I agree that signed cards add to the collectability.

Every FWA I have is in a penny sleeve/toploader and taped at the top to prevent sliding out.

On a slightly different note, some of my favorite cards are not jersey are autos. Just rare SSP cards or variations

Meh, those don't tickle my fancy either. Purely a rookie card collector. I do have a couple FWAs that are inadvertent SSPs though (Nikita Filatov and Tuukka Rask come to mind).

your missing out if you confine your collecting to just rookie cards. There are so many cool cards out there that are not true rookies.

I would bet a lot of little sisters, brothers etc make good $$ signing a stack of cards for their big NHL brother....I don't mind some auto's but a good majority are so ugly I could care less how great the player is, I don't want it! Often I prefer a low # RC with no auto or fabric in appearance, but to each their own....

It was always my goal to collect only rookies. Everything else is just fluff to me.

This gives me focus and determination.

My wallet is happier if I focus on one type of card too. I live on a fixed income, so I don't have the resources to buy every card I like.

My wallet is happier if I focus on one type of card too. Even if I could afford it, I would not collect any cards with memorabilia in them, for example. There are so many memorabilia cards out there, it is sickening. BORING. I despise parallels too. Those are nothing more than filler in sets to me.

i like memorabilia cards as it is something different. I could do without some of the parallels. They make more parallels to increase production while increasing box prices as well. Seems unfair to us collectors. I do agree that their is nothing better to collect that rookie cards. Do you collect any vintage hockey?

Vintage cards are very expensive too. Again, I do not have the resources for those.

I have a few cards that are older than 1980 but I was extremely lucky to get them.

View my bucket at the link I provided you and you will see exactly what I have.
