My pick is definitely Barry Sanders

No doubt about it...absolutely no contest...I do like Earl Campbell second, and Walter Payton and Gale Sayers also up there,Emmitt Smith no better than fifth

the league is a lot softer now, turf toe, ouch ouch, i have to sit out 3 games.
which of you can remember when a player would play the whole game, as in both ways.
and i mean play football, not footsie.
on the field the whole 60 minutes, i doubt it there are 2 or 3 playing today that could do that.[/quote]
Firstly, I am a Cowboy fan and I don't think Emmitt is the greatest rb of all time but neither is Barry Sanders. Neither one can hold a candle to Jim Brown or Walter Payton. Bearfield, why are you so spiteful? Everyone else here seems to have an opinion but you seem like you have an axe to grind. What did Emmitt personally do to you? All of these guys made the max amount of money they possibly can, and good for them. You mean if you had an opportunity to make that kind of money you wouldn't right? because you want to be "classy". How about mentioning the charity work he does? Favre, Marino, Montana, Payton foundation, some of the greats of all time have their own hologram logos that they put on their own signed merchandise and sell it in their own stores/sites/whatever. Are all of these guys not "classy"? Jim Brown, one of the all time greats if not the greatest RB, pimps himself to every cause he can, makes movie and tv appearances whenever possible. Oh yeah, a few years he was accused of abusing his wife and even went to jail for a bit...I guess he is not a great or "classy" either. That all time great list has OJ #23, Grange and Thorpe ( two of the greatest of all time) coming in at #80 and #88. Enough said. Lastly, please don't comment about something that you obviously have no clue about...turf toe most of the time involves torn ligaments that take over a year to heal. I would rather have a broken foot (fractured metatarsal, calcaneous or talus bones) than turf toe any day. It is ONE OF THE MOST PAINFUL INJURIES. The astroturf and the new synthetic turfs they use nowadays cause this condition...it rarely happened in the old days. (yes, I am an expert on this condition because I have treated them in my line of work). High ankle sprain is not just a sprain, it is ligament damage and that is why it takes so long to heal. You have some great points but they lose their credibility when they are attached to a certain vindictiveness. Yes, players are not as tough nowadays but that is a separate issue. Emmitt may not be the greatest of all time but please don't question his toughness. He was one of the most durable backs who played on astroturf his whole career. He played with a separated shoulder and broken fingers in a certain game against the Giants and even fended off a would be defender with the affected hand all the way into the endzone...
    In my humble opinion...
    1)Jim Brown
    2)Walter Payton
    3)Gale Sayers
    4)Earl Campbell and OJ
    5)Barry Sanders
Gale Sayers could also change his direction on a dime and was a physical back to go with it. Who knows, he could have been the greatest...woulda coulda shoulda...Emmitt is definitely in the top 10. Just my opinion, nothing personal.

I agree with the above poster on the turf toe injury...I read an article about it two years ago, and it was pretty gruesome...Running Backs, Receivers, and Corners are affected the most, since you rely on your big toe for your cutting ability

I think this is a great thread, and I respect everybody's opinion...I feel that just about everybody mentioned is a worthy candidate for the top 5...I wish Mikesilvia had made this a poll thread, because I'd like to see how the numbers stack up....I think most agree that either Jim Brown or Barry Sanders was the greatest

That said, I'm having a hard time shaking the "quitter" label given to Sanders and then Favre by some...I guess that makes Jim Brown a quitter too, since he retired to pursue acting...Pat Tillman also "quit", since he turned down a multi million dollar deal to join the military

This last paragraph is specifically for Georgehenrycollector....The Lions running game was designed to create two holes on each play, so that Barry had the option of choosing the best lane. This is called designing your scheme to best utilize the talent you have...I don't know how you can twist this into saying he's a me-first player...Barry also was the highest paid RB in the NFL in 1996, 1997, & 1998...so again, i'm confused how you came to the conclusion "he quit for money"...And Barry ALWAYS handed the ball to the ref after scoring, rarely showing any kind of elation because he didnt want to offend others. Since we're discussing facts here, the NFL started fining players in the mid 90's who removed their helmet while on the field, which I refer to as the Emmitt Smith rule. Emmitt always removed his helmet and took a knee in the end zone after scoring...Now, I LOVE TD CELEBRATIONS, so I had no problem with Emmitt at all....And I'm not labeling Emmitt a "me-first" player, but Barry DEFINITELY DOES NOT deserve that label...He's one of the most humble players to ever wear an NFL shield.

Lastly, has anybody ever heard of the term "breaking someones ankles"...Barry coined the phrase....Watch the video in post #21...that pretty much negates all the negative rushing plays he had in his career

Its nice to see how you change things around to meet your standards. Barry wanted a new deal from the lions. He didn't get what he wanted so he quit. As for Emmitt's Helmet thing he was praising the guy upstairs. So Im cool with that. As for giving the ball to the rep Alot of the bad boys of the nfl do that now does that make them the best? Either way Neither Emmitt or Barry is the best RB ever. I have seen Earl campbell play Marshall Faulk Tony Dorsett Walter payton and alot of other Great backs run and to say that a scattback like barry is the best, sorry but no can do.

who says barry was a scatback? and what exactly is a scatback?
whatever, barry certainly wasn't one unless the term means the best running back ever.
are you also "cool" with emmitt keeping every he got a TD with? i'm certainly not.
