I do not disagree about the Cowboys line but to say that he was just handed the ball and waited for an opening is crazy. The way you make it seem is that you could put any other running back in his place and they too would be the all-time leading rusher. Smith wasn't as flashy as Sanders or as graceful as Payton but in my opinion he has to be third on the list.

I can see why you thought that's what I was saying without the second part of my thought...No I don't think you could insert any back in there & get the same results, but I do think Emmitt is slightly overrated because of the great O-Line he had for a large part of his career. Same goes for Aikman. Give any NFL QB that kind of protection & you'll get results.

ditkafan1; jim brown is also one of the top 3, and i can name 8 others besides sanders, payton, and brown who would have out rushed emmitt with that cowboys offensive line and lets not forget his blocking fullback daryl johnston.
mindcrime81; i honestly think you could insert any back behind that line and get 100 yards per game. emmitt was greatly over rated because of that o-line.
of course cowboy and emmitt fans don't think so, but what else is new?

Bob...you are right that you could probably insert most RBs in that lineup & get 100yds per game. But you do have to give Emmitt props for durability. That is a big reason he's the all time rushing leader. He did also have big games when it counted...ie 3 Super Bowl wins. He isn't the top RB of all time, probably not in the top 5, but he is a top 10 back.
DISCLAIMER---I am a Packers fan, NOT a Cowboys fan.

mindcrime1981; i think the reason emmitt is the all time rushing leader is because barry retired early. that and the fact that he didn't take as much punishment at the line.
but, he isn't even in my top 10. query--- would eddie george have out rushed emmitt with emmitts o-line? check his stats before answering. and right now, i would say you are thinking eddie who? :-)

What is with the hate for Eddie george here. Eddie george was a good back. He did his job in houston and tennesse. In Dallas Parcells didn't want him and left him out of games to prove Jones wrong. And yes alot of backs would have gotten more yards with Smiths line and fullback. Why do you think LT looks so good. he has a line and a bruising fullback in lorenzo neal. As for the comment of putting anyback there then why did they start winning only after Emmitt was there. Why did troy hambrick bite so bad with that same line.
As for barry he QUIT folks cause he wanted more money.

I'd say Barry Sanders retired early because he was sick of being on a perpetually bad team, not because he wanted more money. The Loins never made a move to put anything around him & I'm sure that took it's toll...mentally & physically. That said, he still put up ridiculous numbers and had he not retired early would surely be ahead of Emmitt.
Troy Hambrick came in after Emmitt was gone, correct? The monster Dallas O-Line of the early-mid 90's was mostly gone by then, and whatever (if any) was left was OLD.

uhhh...Barry didnt quit...he retired. And had nothing to do with more money...he actually paid the Lions back like 7 million rather than play for them anymore.

All I have to say is WOW, I never knew we had so many EXPERTS on this forum, and Bearfield U are leading the pack as the #1 football guru of all time!!! (you just don't like anyone disagreeing with ya do U)
"you have no brains if you don't pick Barry".
Classic stuff!!
Do you still want "jail time" for the New England Patriots, because taping sideline stuff is the same as fixing games right!!!
To the original question, It's too hard to really compare backs from different decades, guys are much stronger now, and quicker, defenses are faster, smarter ect.
My opinion, Jim Brown #1, Barry #2, Emmitt #3
On a side note, if L.T. stays healthy, and plays 5 or 6 more years, he will be inserted to the left of Jom Brown, and move everyone down a slot in my opinion. He is somewhere in the top 10 already I think.
