This is where it gets screwed up....If winning the Calder has to do with most points or most wins by a rooki, then they need to change the name....
The Calder Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League."
Not top scorer.....
Doughty leads all rookies in Ice time....23:48 per game....Next rookie - Schenn with 22:09 (not even close to Calder) and then Parent 19:46 (not even close to Calder)
Doughty plays in EVERY situation - PP, PK, Even, OT, Shootouts
Doughty has make very few "rookie" mistakes - only 3 that I can even think of.....
He can take the puck end to end - Reminds me of the way Paul Coffey used... to skate.....Sweet!!!! The guy is the real deal.....and will only get better.....
With all that said - I personally think Mason will win it (unless he does a complete shut down - doubt it)...He has clearly shown he is the #1 goalie in Columbus......and "most proficient in his first year of competition" - Thats why he should win.....
Runner ups SHOULD be Doughty and either Wheeler or Versteeg

Mason easily wins this. There is no way I could see anyone else taking it. Runner up should be Pekke Rinne or Bobby Ryan, however it probably will be Blake Wheeler. When close, big market guys always trump small market guys.

doughty will not be close.. he has 18 points in 60 games (10 on the pp) and is a -8
i dont care if he plays 35 minutes a game
id also like to compare mason and rinne
Mason has 24 wins Rinne has 20
Mason has 15 Losses Rinne has 10
Mason has 8 SO Rinne has 6
Mason has a 2.16 G.A.A Rinne has a 2.15 G.A.A
Mason has a .920 Save % Rinne has a .926 save %

Mason is currently sitting in a Playoff spot....Rinne is not...
On Doughty - Here are some stats for this year....Not all are in top 10 but keep in mind, last season, Kings were at the bottom of every catagory...last 10 years they have been in bottom 10.....Not that Doughty changed all that himself but he has been a big part of it....so more than SCORING and -8 (Hate this stupid stat), he has been "proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League"
GAA = 12th
GA = 13th
SOG against = 2nd
Save % = 4th
Shooting % = 10th
PP% = 11th
PK% = 14th
Face off % = 4th

chris - people will never get over the stats. but unlike you and me, they don't watch doughty every night and see him play. the problem is that the folks voting don't see him every night either and that's why he won't finish in the top three.
but he's the best rookie i've seen all year by far. just the fact that he's being looked at for the 2010 Canadian Olympic team (only rookie that i know of) tells you the real story on him.

Also, Canadian born players win over players from other countries.
Pekke Rinne + Finland born = not rookie of the year.

Mason gets 60 minutes a night. Even missing what he has from illness and the games that LeClaire played to start the season, my guess is his minutes per game is higher ;)
Second, it's what a player does for their team. LA isnt making the playoffs, and if they get close it isn't MOSTLY because of Doughty.
Mason keeps the CBJ in games their lack of scoring wouldn't have them, and the player he replaced (LeClaire) likely wouldn't either. He's far and away the best rookie this year.

Only rookie? They've already had several stories that they'll have to consider Mason for the Olympic team as well.
I've seen Doughty play. He's going to be a good one for a long time.
But theres a lot of homering going on in this thread, and stats mean a lot.
Look at Barrett Jackmans selection a few years ago. Had a big year that year, but is he the best player of that rookie class? Not by a country mile.

Thats means Mason has been in 9 more games. So that nullifies the difference in GAA and Save %.

Mason for sure!!!!!!!!!!! He has 8 shutouts and is gonna bring his team to their first playoff apperence in franchise history!!!!!!!
