i'm not arguing for doughty over mason. mason is a top five goalie this year and might be a vezina finalist considering the injuries to broduer and luongo.
what i'm saying is i think doughty is the second best rookie this year. as much as i'd like to say he should win, there's no way i could pick him over mason. i think doughty will be a better player in the long run, but that's not what the award is for. mason is having a terrific year and deserves the award.
but to counter...
#1 - there's no way mason makes the olympic team. it's not because he's not good, but because they already have brodeur and luongo (not to mention turco, fleury, etc.) they won't leap frog all those guys to bring in a rookie.
#2 - you can't count goalie minutes. you know as well as i do that no one takes that into account. the point of doughty's minutes is to compare him to other non-goalies as it's silly to compare goalie minutes vs. non-goalie minutes.
#3 - i agree the Kings probably won't make the playoffs and that will cost doughty in the voting. but the argument could be made that doughty has had a greater impact on the kings than any other player this year. quick has been good, but so has ersberg and labarbera had similar stats when he was playing. doughty has made a huge difference and has contributed in all facets of the game. in my opinion, this is what puts him ahead of wheeler, versteeg, ryan, etc.
i'm not saying this is how the vote will go, but how it should go. i know it's about stats because everyone loves the goal scorer, but that doesn't make it right.

I concur.....
And for the record - in a earlier post I said Mason would win....just making a case for Doughty vs the other possibly runner ups....He should be in the top 3....but East Coast Bias will win over just as it did a couple years ago when Kopitar had a better rookie year than Staal....
****Not saying Kopitar would have won....not by far....just should have been in the top 3 over Staal

but he's the best rookie i've seen all year by far. just the fact that he's being looked at for the 2010 Canadian Olympic team (only rookie that i know of) tells you the real story on him.
I had to chime in, I am not taking anything away from Doughty, nor am I defending Mason. but the above statement makes no sense to me.......How does Doughty Being considered for the Canadian Team have any bearing on Calder Voting? And for the record......I feel that Doughty should be SERIOUSLY considered giving his stats.....and what the Calder really is meant to be given out for.....

it has bearing on the calder because the calder is about the best rookie in the league, and if doughty is the only rookie being considered for the olympic team, doesn't that mean that at least those in charge of the olympic team believe he's one of the top rookies? just trying to use some logic. doughty doesn't get much press since he's on the west coast, a defensemen and playing on a team that will probably miss the playoffs. but if those "in the know" consider him a top d-man in the league, that should give a clue as to doughty's place among the top rookies.
what doesn't make sense about it?

I understand the whole "west coast" point you are trying to make, and I agree with you, and I also agree that its is VERY HARD for a defenseman to win. The point I was trying make is the is doesnt matter what the Canadien olympic Commitee think, they arent the Voters. I see your point that "someone" should take notice if the Olympic committee has. but that isnt the state of things. And I would like to say again Doughty should be in the Finalist Voting. We also know that sometimes it trophy voting ends being a "popularity contest"....sad

ok, i see what you are saying and that is very true. i guess my point is that "hockey people" understand how great of a year doughty is having. i have said from the beginning that i think mason will win and i don't think doughty will be in the top three, but i think he should be.
i don't think it will have any effect on the voting, i was just trying to back up why doughty should be in the top 3.

Easy, it will be one of these guys:
Ryan
Mason
Versteeg
Doughty
Krejci
Wheeler
If it was my decision, I would pick Doughty, Mason, or Versteeg. Just my 2 cents...
