Don't forget the 86-87 box top had Roy on it and people were cutting them off and
claiming they were blank backs.......the cuts were perfect to.As far as the guy in London he was selling complete sets of blank backs the year after they came out and he had lots of them......

I dont think its a matter of what OTHERS think, because they don't have to look at it everyday. Yea, there are the "holy grails" of cards, every player has them. (Ex. 05/06 Sidney Crosby Logo Shield auto RC) It's what you think. Personally, I would rather have the Roy I have, but it has nothing to do with the value of it. I like it better because I pulled it, and think it looks awesome. Some cards I wouldn't let go for $500-$1000 because Im in it for the collection itself, and not the money. You're Roy is nice, dont get me wrong, but different people have different likes. You probably even would of got a MUCH better response if you wouldn't have said anything at all, and just showed a pic to be honest.

That was kind of my point about THE MASK. Its essentially worthless in monetary value but it has good memories for me. Personally if I had a peice of cardboard worth $10,000
no matter how much I liked it that puppy would get sold. I'd find a new favourite and pay off my student loans lol

The monetary issue is not really an "issue" for some collectors. $10K is maybe a lot for you, but for others it is small money when you earn $200K/year. This is why we have cars at $15K and $80K. Different budget, different cards. Whatever the memories, you can bet on a contest the best card of Patrick Roy made in the hobby history woudn't be a common $0.50 card! I think a great card is based on rarity, value, design, product, demand. Many other criterias are also applicable.

You make good points, honestly, IF you view collecting like you do. And that's perfectly fine! Everyone is different ya know, personally yea, I would also give a card up for $10,000 if it was worth 9 or 10 grand, just because of the position im in. (Also in college and stuff, loans like crazy) But, I dont think I would have that kinda card as well in the position im in haha. A valuable card to me, for example, is my Evgeni Malkin Rookie Review. Its not the MOST valuable card ever, and who knows, it might be worth tons in the future. But I love it because it was one of the first "bigger" hits I ever pulled, and Malkin and Crosby are my idols. I have a big box full of baseball cards from the 50's that my Dad collected when he was a kid and he gave to me, sure some are worth a good bit of money, but some are worth 3 bucks. BUT I wouldn't sell em or trade em period, just because of the sentimental value.
At any rate, yea your probably right about the best Roy card in existence being a reaaaaaaaaaaaal nice one, I wouldnt bet against it, and personally think this thread got out of hand, and too deep haha. Good topic though, and for the sake of argument Im typing this. Point is, is what does "the best Roy card in existence" help, or do for you, in any point in your life, unless you have it. It doesn't, so ACTUAL importance is personal! :)
And juuuuuust for the heck of it:

The one you put here is a good candidate. As you said, the choice is different for each of us, to put the finger on THE best Roy card is very difficult, there are so many great cards out there.
For me, the best card of Roy made is the one in my sig: Roy - Habs - perfectly Hard signed - a full NHL Logo from Habs uniform - production run of 1 - from an expensive high-end product - great card condition - so great card! I do not see what Roy card I could accept to acquire in a 1:1 trade for it, I don't think I can upgrade this Roy card when I see all the Roy cards made. This is why I think according to my preferences no Roy cards actually surpasses it. Maybe in the next years I will see a "better" card I would prefer to get. There is a Roy/Fuhr in The Cup, but I don't care about the back of the card featuring Grant Fuhr, so it woudn't be an upgrade for me. For someone else, I understand it could be a different scenario.Last edited by roy.the.greatest; 04-10-2009 at 04:03 PM.

Yea, 100% agree. Haha and NHL Shield Logos, especially an old school orange and black logo, and just in another level haha ya know. I dont even collect Roy at all, but I loooove this card, good chance Im keeping it until I see something I REALLY want. But thats just me. Someone else might give it up for anything that they like.

Can anyone help me identify this Roy card? Bought this a long time ago on eBay for about $7.00. It's from 1998-1999 Upper Deck. The card # is COL1. I haven't been able to find any info on it.
