I hear you, I'm one of those kids with rubber banded cards in a old shoebox (1955). (As an aside, even back then a mantle card was worth a lot in trading for your favorite team or player, so they didn't get put in bike wheels, at least around where I grew up)
As far as first experiences with cards, being a farm kid the first time I saw any cards at all was at my cousins (town kid) in winter 1954. I can still see his stacks of 53 and 54 Bowmans and topps on his kitchen table, and seeing Stan Musial's 53 Bowman color card sitting on top of his Cardinal Pile (even back then we went with teams), I was absolutely hooked on cards as a kid after that. The next year I started buying 55 Bowman packs with my 10c a week.

For me it was my grandmother bringing me Topps cards she cleaned out of the Woolworth's shelves where she worked after kids busted the packs in-store and stole the gum. Either this, or the card collecting kit I got for Christmas that year, yielded my first Alan Trammell ('87 Topps), and the rest is history.

about 3 years ago, I went into a card shop and saw a don mattingly auto, bat, jersey card that a frequent customer pulled and was on display. I wanted to buy it, but the card shop owner wouldnt even let me contact the owner so i could buy it (unless he was getting a cut).
I liked the card so much, I started looking for it on ebay (found a similar one of Derek Jeter). Shocked that there were more of this brand of card of different players i started collecting the set. Eventually I did get the Don Mattingly.
While building the set, I found and picked up many other nice cards from other sports. So I guess I would have to say the local card shop owner got me hooked.

I have been collecting since I was 7 years old. My mom's ex-husband used to take me and my brother to the swap meet in Columbia, SC. From there, I would go after Bo Jackson and lower end packs (ya know, whatever $5 would get me for the week).
During 6th grade I even helped out a friend of the family at her card shop in SC. I got pennants, vintage, and just about anything else that I would find for helping out in clearing the back room.
I took a few years off when I was 13 or so and went back and forth until I joined the army in 2005; the wife bought me a couple boxes for Christmas in 05 and since then it has been ongoing.
Now I am more into set building and enhancing my Luis collection, my brother is more of the high end product collector and we exhange his DBacks cards for my White Sox and Frank Thomas cards. Hey, I even have the wife yearning to go to a card shop when I re-deploy.......

who got you into collecting
my son nathan who I believe was 6 at that time asked me if he could buy
two packs of black diamond hockey out of three remaining packs in the box, turned out to be malkin's rc and at that particular time it was a $250
pull.
needless to say nathan pulled his dad back into the hobby after many years of being away from it.
I stopped collecting in 1990-91 but have made up for it since!
now me and my two boys are non-stop collecting and trading
all of my habs pieces belong to nathan his collection of habs is quite an achievement for an 8 year old to own, plus he has a steelers collection that is also quite imnpressive.
