I would actually prefer it, that or the companies get limited production licenses from the nfl. I always hear people talking crap about the over produced cards of the late 80's early 90's, well what do you think is happenig now. The companies have just found away to make people think its not happeing by producing so may different sets and using paralells. Dont people realize that thye didt get anything worth a dang when they pull a base rookie serial numbered to 500, they act like there arent 5 other versions of that same card with the slightest of differences. Heck even these nfl shield rookie auto 1/1's arent 1/1's anymore. its like oh wow i pulled the spa 1/1, but theres also an ultimate, an exquisite, a natioal treasures, a sterling a contenders, a regular topps, atopps chrome, a bowman, a bowma chrome, a triple threads, a letterman, am upper deck, a heroes, an elite, a classics, a gridiron gear, a threads, a rookie threads, a rookie edition, a draft edition, and so on and so on and thats just 1/1's.
Peyton Manning had probably 100x the number of true rookies as joe montana, now look at matt ryan, matt ryan probably had as many 1/1's as peyton manning did true rookies. And its only going to get worse, its sad when an exquisite matt rayn 1/1 will never even come close to what a 81 topps montana bgs 10 is worth, even if ryan makes it to the hof, theres simply way too many other 1/1's out there.
Id rather have no autos and g/u and have base rookies have value than to have things the way they are today where people just take and toss away everything that isnt a "hit" or only want your high-end cards in trades even when your only looking for set needs or a $10 auto. I think im in the minority when i open packs and get excited to see a base peyton manning or cards i need to complete the set, i actualy look at the base cards, not just shuffle through them looking for a hit.

Collecting cards used to be a fun activity for the young and young at heart. Now it's mostly another domain for people to hustle and get their money.

I probably would as long as I didn't have to drop $100+ on a box of cards to get the players I collect lol

10 people voted no, yet none have posted. I'd like to hear reasons from the other side as well.

I will still say that on the other hand I like collecting because of the opportunity to get autographs of people like Favre or Kobe, as I ordinarily wouldn't be able to without paying a lot. It's kind of more fun pulling an auto of a favorite player like them than to buy one on a helmet or something in some cases heh I'd even like to pull some jersey card of Favre or Kobe. As a matter of fact I was real happy when I pulled this GU card of LT in a low end/mid range UD product a few years back. Just getting even a GU from a favorite player is great to me.

I voted no. It's just a matter of preference really. It'd be like watching the game from the sidelines for years and then one day having to go back to the nose-bleed seats behind the goal posts. Once you have something, it's hard to take it away. I like the fact that patches and autos give us more of a connection to the player. I'm a big AP fan, and a card that he signed containing a jersey he actually wore is more interesting to me than a base card produced in a factory that has nothing whatsoever to do with AP himself.
That being said, I think that until the card companies introduce an online database to thwart the scumbags who fake patches and autos, the hobby would probably be better off without these cards. I totally see the counterpoints to this argument, and I agree that patch/autos have a downside with regard to price, fakes, overabundance of supply, etc. Just thought I'd speak up for some of the "no" votes!

love me some elite die-cuts, i have about 40 more to scan tomorrow! but i like GAME-USED patches, bought 82 cards from pack9001 and is fun to pick them up. I only average paying about $3.90 a card so far!
here is a preview of the types I collect and stay away from the others due to takin the fun out of the hobby.

I wish they would just go back to autographics and upper deck jerseys and then a patch variation....collecting was way better then.

I don't agree with most of the posters and I was one that voted that I wouldn't buy if they took the high end away. I've spent tens of thousands of dollars on product and if the hobby came to a screaching halt and went old school (no autos, game-used, serialized limited production cards) I just wouldn't have the interest anymore. As it is now, would I rather get a box of 2009 Score football for $28.99 or a box of 2009 Score Inscriptions football for $60.99? I wouldn't even have to pause for thought on this one as I want the hits in the Inscription and could care less about all the base you get in the regular product. This is also why I like high-end products, because even the base cards have some value because they are limited. Maybe it's because I think more about the investment side now then when I was a kid. I have 7 of the 99 Chad Henne National Treasures rookies and assuming that he ever starts I am going to see some real bang for my buck. You think the hobby would be better off without the older collectors like me that like to buy/sell like a mini-stock exchange?
What's wrong with a bit of everything from low-end to high-end as long as there isn't 100 products in a year?
