I wasn't implying that collecting base and inserts doesn't connect you to the sport. Just that the patch and the auto just make that connection even more pronounced for me. Like I said before, I think of it (base/inserts vs. patch/autos) as the difference between sitting in the nose-bleed seats behind the goal posts and actually being on the sidelines during the game. Just going to the game is going to enhance your experience as a football fan, but if you can get on the sideline, it's even better.
This is just my opinion and the way it works for me. As I stated earlier in this thread, I know that with patch/autos comes higher prices, susceptibility to counterfeiting, and a devaluing of base cards. Everyone has their own preference when it comes to collecting and I certainly respect that.

I started collecting in 1992 when pulling a $20 card was a big hit. I honestly remember getting excited over pulling a card that booked $2 or $3.
To be honest, collecting was a lot more fun then than it is now.
I had a few friends that I had an agreement with. I would give them all of the cards that I pulled of their fav players and they gave me all of the cards that they pulled of my fav players. It was fun, we enjoyed collecting for collecting and BV was a term that did not exist in our trades. It was truly fun and truly a hobby back then.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure my post didn't come off as dismissive or saying that one way of collecting is better than another.

I think that might be a common thing among high end collectors.

Possibly b/c it was more of a hobby back in the day as compared to now when collecting is similar to scratch off lottery tickets where the buyers look for hits.

I agree with what's being said but say for example AP has 7 big 1/1 RC's. They will always carry value because truthfully there are alot of 1/1's (plates, manufactured patches, logo shields, tags, etc. However, the big 1/1 are the logo shields and the big cards of AP are the 1/1 logo shield from Exquisite, SPA, Ultiamte, etc that sell for thousands. There are more BGS or PSA 10 Montana RC's then say a true 1/1 RC of AP that sells for so much. So it goes both ways. That is why the true 1/1 high-end RC's will always hold value if the player performs. Even regular RC's from say SPA, etc where 999 are made they are popular so they hold value.

My goal is to get the best cards of my favorite players. If AP's best RC was $20 instead of $2500 that's fine with me. Back when boxes cost $20 or $35 I felt like I got my money's worth and loved set building. I had every football set out there up to 1994 and then it got out of control. I used to be thrilled to pull a rare insert... these days you just get mad when you don't get all 3 autographs you're supposed to get "on average" in a box. Now, I can buy a $150 box and go home with $10 worth of cards--and Autographs and game used cards are a commodity--AP will be forced to retire early due to carpal tunnel from signing so many autographs. So, YES I would love to go back to when collecting was simple and enjoyable.
