I was a bit of surprised by last weekend's box office, but it shows that avatar has legs at the box office. However, I don't think it will beat Titanic at the box office, because Titanic had Leo and girls would flock to the theater every week just to see him. Yea, bummer, lol. And I would love to see a trilogy from Cameron if he and ONLY HE makes it. There is definitely enough to make at least one more.

it would obviously be him making it because hes the one who came up with the idea in 1994

Visual appeal was very high, though I felt like they took too much time showing off the simulated environments. Basically that was James Cameron saying "I paid big bucks to make this, so you're going to look at it." The historical allegory and environmental message was pretty ham-fisted, almost made me think Ted Turner was behind it. Also a bit insensitive when you think about it. Basically this guy is saying to the blue people, "Hey, I'm better at being one of you than all of you are!" I mean, that's about as PC as declaring a white scientologist "the last samurai." And it was pretty easy to see that certain plot devices would be reappearing later. But overall, the experience was enjoyable. I think I'd give it a 7/10.

It's not the best film of the year, but compared to your average blockbuster, it's still very good.

    Cool

...Yah I can see the global warming/pursuit of resources idea in it...

lol, I completely missed the global warming aspect of this movie, although I did recognize the ecological/environmental messages that brought to mind concerns about strip-mining, corporate irresponsibility, rainforest preservation, "tree-huggers", etc.
...but what really stood out to me was the connection to the treatment of Native Americans (Na'vi by the white men (sky people). Did anyone notice the dream catcher in the office of the corporate guy (giovanni ribisi)? Also the language used throughout the film like "savages" etc. And the spiritual characteristics that the Na'vi hold seem pretty close to those of the Native Americans.

One of my friends hit the nail on the head by comparing Avatar to a cross between Dances with Wolves and Fern Gully. Lol

I missed the dream catcher but I definitely caught the Native American connection. imho, it was like the the Na'vi were Native Americans but living on a different celestial body. In fact, Cherokee actor Wes Studi was the voice of the Na'vi warrior, "Eytukan", who was Sully's rival. Wes Studi also had significant roles in "Dances With Wolves" (1990) and "Last of the Mohicans" (1992). This movie also reminded me a bit of "Pocahontas". I did like the movie but the plot was derivative of the previously mentioned movies. Even the concept of transporting your consciousness into another place and time via a machine, reminded me of "The Matrix".

Opinions opinions, people say it sucks, is mediocre, isn't the best film of the year, yet I disagree and I think it is the best film of the year. Really, what film was better? This was an aweful year for movies, but I still would say this has been the best movie in a very long time.

Glad I'm not the only one who compared it to Fern Gully...lol

Overall, it was a very good movie...didn't know much of anything about it going in, but man, the special effects were amazing...and the story line was pretty good, and it was a fast-paced movie, which was pretty surprising considering it was ~160 minutes long!

Yes, and all without a non-sequitur song by an iguana with the voice of Tone Loc.
