    July 17, 1955 - Disneyland Opens

    Disneyland, Walt Disney's metropolis of nostalgia, fantasy, and futurism, opens on July 17, 1955. The $17 million theme park was built on 160 acres of former orange groves in Anaheim, California, and soon brought in staggering profits. Today, Disneyland hosts more than 14 million visitors a year, who spend close to $3 billion.

    July 18, 1936 - Spanish Civil War Begins

    On this day in history, the Spanish Civil War began as General Francisco Franco led an uprising of army troops based in North Africa. The war, which lasted nearly three years, devastated Spain and resulted in a Nationalist victory, dissolving the Second Spanish Republic and establishing the state of Spain.

    On this date in history, Apollo 11 and its astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins, went into orbit around the moon. The very next day, July 20, Aldrin and Armstrong would become the first men to set foot on the moon as Collins orbited above.
