    July 21, 1861 - The First Battle of Bull Run

    Three months after the Civil War erupted at Fort Sumter, Union military command still believed that the Confederacy could be crushed quickly and with little loss of life. In July, this overconfidence led to a premature offensive into northern Virginia by General McDowell. In the first major land battle of the Civil War, a large Union force under General Irvin McDowell is routed by a Confederate army under General Pierre G.T. Beauregard.

    July 22, 1894 - The First Motorized Race Held

    On this day in history, the first ever motorized race was held in France, between the cities of Paris and Rouen. This French steam-powered wagonette for hire (shown above) was in attendance at the world's first organized motorcar race, the Paris-Rouen event held in July of 1894. It may have been one of the 102 entries. Twenty-one cars started the 80 mile race, the first vehicle finished in five hours and forty minutes. The winner was Jules de Dion.

    Hahah yeah that'd be awesome. It's interesting to think about how "riveting" that race must have been. 80 miles in nearly 6 hours with 102 cars. Couldn't have been too exciting. But definitely ground-breaking.
