They do, then claim a non-paying member, and repost and try again, they have nothing to lose

If they do it often, can't they be reported?

You'd be amazed at how many bids you can get running up the score against you with a minute left. By going as late as possible you can overcome your real and phony adversaries alike.
You can report them if they do it once. Whether eBay does anything about it is a different matter entirely.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

There are a LOT of people out there who will look at an auction and think..... "Yeah, I'd pay $20 for this" so they bid $20, since the auction is only at a bid of $5 already. They are immediatly outbid by the previous bidder - becuase their bid was $25.
Now they reconsider their "max". Maybe they should try an extra couple of bucks..... and another couple, and another couple.
Sniping gives you compition almost no time to reconsider their own bids.
Of course you're right though.... if you want a card for $50, place a snipe, and someone else bid $100 - no chance you win.
The computer locking up thing is just sloppy though. Yes, I've heard lots of stories (it's happened to me too) but the only reason that this kind of snipe fails for someone, is becuase they're not doing it right :) Use a third party tool to place your bid for you, with 8 seconds (or less) left. There are very good, free, sites out there.
If you know what you're bidding on.... have a good gauge on the normal value... and stay away from even numbers.... it works pretty well.

I don't snipe on $70.00 cards, Iv'e only paid more than $70.00 one time in my life on a card. I think that is the rub. I am talking about cards that generate little "Flavour of the Week" interest, and mostly cards that are sold in "Lots".
If you know cards are going to have 15 watchers and 17 bids, then of course, secure a bid. I am talking about cards that have less than 1 day to go and have One or Zero bids.
On popular cards, the snipe will get yourself sniped, as there is somebody out there at 4 seconds left that is going to outbid you at 1 second, by $5.00 to $15.00.

Im Bad for Sniping cards at the last Second...With Shipping These Days Usually Costing Me more than what the card is Worth i try to get the card as cheap as i can...If i put my max bid the other interested parties most of the time keep placing bids until they become highest bidder (Ive done the same) So I Just Place a $5 Bid at Start and wait till the end before Posting my Max Bid im willing to pay for the item

This. I try to be the first one into the pool, and the last one out.

I just try to be last one out... :) It sucks that sniping is the way to go, but it is a lot of the time.

Another winner to add to your lists. Stevick2013, the guy decided to bid of 26/30 teams on our Elite box break and 6/30 of the Artifacts break racked up his bill to $130 then messages and tells me he has made a huge mistake as he thought it was something completely different which it clearly has all the information he's ever need in the title and the description so he clearly didnt read or didnt want to pay that much money. After we told him we'd discount him he stopped responding so we cancelled the transactions today (This happened lastnight) and right away he is online to accept the cancellations then messages us with a story about how his power went out and he just got it back on and now his credit card is on hold. what a headache.

I thought that Team Breaks were against Ebay rules. You're complaining about someone not paying for an illegal auction????
