I am trying to win an auction on eBay. There have been 19 bids placed, but the current high bid is only $10. I checked the bid list to see if there was any shilling going on (does not appear to be). It does appear, however, that there are only two active bidders. Me and another guy who placed 18 bids in 10 cent increments.

My questions would be: Is there something fishy going on? I can't see someone sitting there entering 18 separate bids, each one 10 cents higher than the last. I know there are web services that will do proxy bidding for you. Are you able to set the bid increments with those proxy bid services? That would explain the 18 10-cent bids.

My mobile app , there 2 options to bid .. one just places a bid to the next increment , the other lets you set an amount

I have a few of my auctions ( me being seller ) that somebody placed a bunch of small bids till they got the high bid

I doubt there is anything funny going on , just based on that info you gave

Putting many small bids on an item is a buying strategy, they make you think there is huge interest in the card to deter you from placing a bid.

Also, I want that DeKeyser. If I suspect the bidding has been shilled I never take the 2nd chance offer. Sometimes I even call out the seller. I have even taught a few people about eBay by suggesting something was being shilled and that the buyer will send a 2nd chance offer, just to prove to people that the auctions are indeed being shilled.

He's fishing, hoping to get the card for the least price possible and seeing just how high your interest is. I went through something similar yesterday with a Gorges Prime card - guy had put in about 25 bids total on the card, each just the minimum increment allowable so that he could see my limit. He didn't get me. :)

I just said it looked fishy. I agree, the seller looks absolutely impeccable. Perhaps you should PM me before badmouthing me? Give it a try and put your shirt back on.

I have Bought from this Seller Before With No Issues.....usually When Customers List there cards on a Hobby Shop's Ebay Store there is a high risk the Seller (Person Who owns The card(s) Will Shill up his own cards without the Account Holders Knowledge..

That's a very good point - there are still a lot of consignment sellers out there and there is frequently no way for the seller to tell if the item is being shilled by its owner - and since this is technically not a violation of eBay's shilling policy (no collusion and no proof of refunding/release from obligation to buy), there is little incentive to find out.

Back to some other points about multiple bids, ever since eBay changed the bidding interface several weeks ago, I have found myself just using the one-click button several times on many auctions to either find the point where I need to try to snipe it (a perfectly allowable and legitimate strategy) right before it ends or to just find the point where I become the high bidder. I then might leave it there or go ahead and place another bid with a true maximum if I think I won't be around at the time the auction ends. This could possibly look like shilling if you look at my bid history.

eBay overall card prices. Wow. I just spent an hour on the eBay general Hockey Card board. Prices through the roof, particularly on Young Gun Bums, 70's Topps cards that are 30 cent cards, sellers wanting from $2.00 to $12.00, Common worthless jersey cards of 4th liners not even in the league 4-8 years old, $7.00 and up. etc.

    What are people thinking?

Well then, don't buy them. Find other sellers and let these guys have cards pile up for years. They're more than free to ask whatever price they want, and they just won't sell them. Go buy from people selling them for cheaper.
